    A Parent TOLD Me

A toddler child needed diapering supplies by yesterday morning. I checked the bag, and it was completely empty so I issued an invoice for a convenience fee. Almost immediately Mom lets me know that I "made a mistake" because I never told her that they needed diapering supplies. Especially since I did not tell her verbally, so she will bring it on Wednesday (mind you, we needed it Monday) and I can take the fee away.

I had to let her know that I cannot memorize and remember the diapering supply stock of my 6 children that are IN diapers in order to verbally tell every parent, which is why I write it on their daily sheet with a due date.

I was then accused of not writing it on the daily sheet. I nipped that in the bud by forwarding the e-mail since we do electronic ones.

I handed Dad the bill when he picked the kids up and let him know it needed to be paid prior to their arrival tomorrow morning.

Why should I have to beg for diapering supplies for someone elses child? Why is it not acceptable to do as I said I would do in my handbook and just write it on the daily sheet for the parent (who should read it)? And, why is it ok to make someone wait THREE DAYS for it?! I should have told Mom that it was fine if she brought in the diapering supplies on Wednesday, and she can come pick up toddler now and keep toddler home until then as well. Good golly.

You told her No and gave her a consequence. She is responding with a temper tantrum.

IMHO: You can give her three choices:

    1. Convenience fee when she has to use others supplies.
    2. Turned away at door when her child does not have supplies
    3. Termination for refusal to provide for childs needs.
    - Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.

I would just send the child home without a diaper on today (and hope like hell they poop or pee in the car! ), and let them know if this happens again, the child will not be accepted into daycare without the needed supplies.

Parents are required to bring diapers in a package that are stored here on a shelf with their name on it. I write on the last diaper for the day with a Sharpie "Diapers Please " when I only have enough for two more days. Parents never can say they didn't get the message unless they don't change their child. If they forget them the next day the message is " Diapers needed" and if they forget and I run out I have spares and the message is "Butt Naked " and they get a bill. I always forget to verbally remind them and have found this to work for me.
            I see little people.

keep back ups in your outside bag and somewhere other then the cubbie.

I keep extras on hand, but my parents are great! They know to send in diapers when needed because it is staring them in the face when they walk in.

In a pinch I have borrowed and replaced from another child.

I too love Miss Muffets style-

Another thing that has worked well for me in the past is to call the parent at work and let them know the child needs diapers, wipes, creams etc..... clothing or tell them in the morning to come back with these items or come get the child. I don't like having to do this-

I used to have parents bring supplies in when they reached the half way point of their current supply. I ran into some issues with that method.

They would bring me 6 months worth (daycare isn't that big)
They would forget since the reminder was so far in advance
I would flat out forget to tell them as everyone was on a different schedule

So now I require parents to bring a month's supply of diapers (NO more than that) on the first of each month.

ALL parents are required to bring a re-fill package of wet wipes and a box of tissues at the same time.

I keep a list on the parent bulletin board and as each family turns their supplies in, I check off their name.

Started this in Jan of this year and haven't had a single parent forget since.

This is why when I started up I decided to supply diapers and wipes. I new I would have enough drama over other situations, so I didn't want to deal with this. Parents have a hard enough time remembering their checkbook once a week!

I write on my diapers too. My parents are pretty good but sometimes they forget it in the car and then I get a phone call when they are at work that they have a pack in their car, it happens so I have spares but I don't charge them. Now if they forget like 2 days in a row, well then yes, will be charged.

I still have them pack the diapers in the diaper bag and bring them each day....I know -then there are diaper bags to store. They are responsible and if there are no diapers they get a call at work to bring some. It's their responsibility and I don't want to have to keep track of their diapers at my center. It's on their shoulders completely.

this is what I do. but I have a smaller group where only two are in diapers so its not a huge deal with bags and such. I know many of the providers here have a half dozen kids or more each day so at that point, diaper bags are beyond annoying. I like Black Cats method!
