I Hate It When I Get Caught Using My "Real" Voice!

I was changing an 18mos diaper and he was squirming everywhere. I had his feet in one hand and a handful of poopy wipes in the other when he turned himself into a headstand. I said in a harsh tone "Stop it P*****!" Then I look up and see a dcm standing there. It's not all rainbows and butterflies but I hate it when this kinda thing happens. Now I am all paranoid (that I reacted in a normal way) and dcm will be unhappy with me.

I used to feel like that, too. If the worst thing that Mom has to worry about is her daycare provider using their "real voice" when her child is wriggling around like a wild child then she can count her lucky stars. You see all the news stories out there!

...says the lady who will put a child in hula hoop time with their parents standing there. LOL.

ouch. I would feel weird about it too, but if I were the mom I would think - I'm glad dcp doesn't allow her to get away with it!

I had a kid start climbing on my dining room table at pick up today. With a DCM standing there. I TOLD him to get down, and then started to walk towards him. He started to push the chairs out. Real voice came out, "dcb get down from that table right now before you fall!" dcb was assisted down by me. dcm said she was glad I ran a 'tight ship'

When I was teaching and had my own kids in daycare I caught the daycare provider changing my son who was squirming around and instead of using her real voice, she started hitting him.

Moral of the story...I wouldn't worry too much about using your real voice around parents. You weren't being abusive, just stern. Nothing wrong with that!

I was getting after a child one time and I turned around and the parent was standing there. Parent never said anything. I wasn't abusive by any means, just using my "voice". But, still found it embarassing, I really don't know why. It's not like they think we just color and sing all day. They know their kids misbehave

Ah....it's happened to all of us. I have never apologized for it or explained it in any way. Mom's have to use their stern voice too, so I am sure she understood.

I had to use my stern voice in front of a parent last week. I felt horrible for about 30 mins, then got over it.

The child was running, screaming, and hiding all over the backyard at pick up. Mom was bribing with chocolate, the park, Disneyland, etc. I got tired of it and picked her up, using my stern voice, I told her that this behavior was not acceptable and it was time to go home with Mommy. I handed her off to Mommy, crying. I opened the front door to let them out and then closed it right behind them. I wasn't sure if Mommy was embarrassed or upset, but I don't care.

There was one particular day during pick up where the children were randomly acting crazy. Everyone was talking/yelling/whining while I was trying to tell dcm something. Well, unfortunately for my dd (who was the most annoying with the whining), she ended up getting the blunt of it. I sternly told her "DD, THAT IS ENOUGH!" She immediately stopped, as did everyone else ::. Dcm laughed and said "Uh oh, now they know you were serious!" Surprisingly, I wasn't ashamed or embarrassed. I think she was getting irritated too and was glad when I got them to simmer down immediately with my mommy voice.

One time DCM came in when I was talking to DCG who had just been in trouble. I was down on her level, taking in a calm voice..... and I got accused of "intimidating" the girl, because I was "in her face".

On the other side, this afternoon, DCB was giving his mom a hard time leaving, so I took his hand and told him in a serious voice, "Mommy wants to go home, we can sing tomorrow" (another classroom was having music time and he wanted to join in). I walked with him and his mom to the door, and she was appreciative of my help.

                      Sometimes we can't win.

I was too shocked to say anything so I just took my kids home. Then called DH to go get our kids' things from this woman and we terminated immediately. She didn't put up a fight for it, she knew that she snapped and was in the wrong.

OP, I think if the parents thought you were too harsh they would have said something or looked at you funny. Yes, it is embarrassing, but it happens!

There's nothing wrong with using your "Mommy Voice" when you have to. A child squirming and being wild on a changing table could be dangerous.

Love it! I think I wrote on here before about how all of my kids seem to need a drink as soon as they lay eyes on their parent at pickup time. Even though they just had a drink and snack 1/2 hour before. Well I started taking the cups away immediately following snacktime. Wel, yesterday, dcb decided when he saw mommy to run to my refrigerator and start throwing a fit. Of course dcm started saying oh are you thirsty? we'll eat at home in her baby voice. Then looked back at the table to see if the cups were there for a drink. I was waiting for her to ask to get a new cup out to give him a drink. Ahh no not happening, then I would have to get 5 other cups out. Told her that they just got done having snack and drinks. Why don't people just grab their kids and GO HOME!!

I give you credit. I would have slapped her.
