    Backbone

Ok my post about provider day off made me think that A LOT of the reason I have "trouble" in this business is because of a lack of backbone & that makes me somewhat wishy-washy sometimes.

So just wondering if you have always had your backbone or if its something that you have learned in the business.

How many years have you been in the child care business too..... This is my 6th year of child care. No backbone ;(

    25+ yrs in Early Childhood.

My mom said I was born bossy.

So for me, it comes naturally.

I struggle with toning it down and not just saying it like I see it.

          Same here!
I tend to speak before I think.... Say what it is.

Oh, I opened legally mid 2011. I've worked in many different childcare settings since 1992 from babysitter to nanny to center to homecare

I have had a backbone my whole life but forgot it a bit when I needed clients. I ended up a bit of an invertibrate for about six months before I found my backbone again. Its been a year or so now and I've maintained my backbone!

Been in daycare for almost 5 years. It took me up until a year and a half ago to get that backbone. Now it's super strong!

I've had my in-home daycare for 12 years. I would say for the past 2 years it's been good and I've for the most part have things the way I want them. Not to say I don't have a hiccup every now and then, but definately alot better than I used to be.

I've been in the business for 23 years, 20 of the home-based. It took me a couple of years in the beginning to realize I needed a backbone, but once I realized it it didn't take long to exercise it into a lean, mean fighting machine .

                    I'm coming into my backbone.

I had to LEARN how to word things nicely. Things don't just come to me that way. Everything is very black and white. When I began this business I worked hard to be "nicey nice" all of the time. Now, I just call it like I see it (with a smile on my face LOL).

                    I am not very flexible.

7 years in the biz and I've had a backbone for 2 of them. Since finding this forum and realizing it was ok to have one. I'm much happier now and love my job.

This is me right here. I think what does it for me too is the fact that I believe in equal enforcement of the rules for everyone. I also hate confrontation but hate being walked on even more. I find I struggle more to NOT bite people's heads off It took me a while to find nicer ways to say things.
