My MIL had a 24/7 childcare decades ago and often times loaded ALL of her DCK's into a car and did her normal required errands. She went to the grocery store, department stores, the beach and the bank....where ever she needed to go. She even regularly took them to Dairy Queen and had ice cream treats.

She had 5 kids of her own and at a minimum at least 5-10 DCK's too. There weren't any regulations about this kind of thing back then. She said that the kids all minded her and had fun going on outings so it was never any big deal.

They didn't have seatbelts or carseats back then either so the kids just climbed in and sat wherever they fit. My DH said the "coveted" spot was always the ledge in the back window of the car or the floor area where the hump is.

I don't think the safety of kids is a laughing matter, but we area also talking about a foreign country that is no where near the safety rules and regs we have which explains the $170 ticket and no other charges.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like any of the kids were hurt, injured or unwilling. I am betting this is probably common where she (the provider) lives.
Remember Madelaine McCann and how she vanished because her parents left her sleeping in her bed while they went out to dinner? Everyone in the U.S. was all like "How could they" and "What were they thinking" etc etc.... without ever taking into account the cultural differences and norms of other countries.

That's what pickup trucks are for, right? Shoot, I can only get 3 on the back of my motorcycle.
        Joking.
        It's awful.

This is how we were when we rode with grandma & grandpa. There were 3 of us grandkids and 2 of our uncles that are just a few years old then us and we would all fight over who got to lay in the window. That was the best place to be because you could wave and make faces at the people behind you:: My cousin use to pick his nose when he got the spot

I LOVED laying in the back window of the car-happyfacehappyfacehappyface

We have classic cars and legally our kids can ride in them not buckled up. They love it and love when they can sit on my lap when we are cruising them.

I actually rode in the back little niche behind the backseat of a vw bug one time on a trip.

In Germany, it's still common for people to leave a sleeping baby in their bed and go down to the pub or restaurant for a late dinner. They might give a baby-monitor to the neighbor "just incase". I guess fire is not as big a concern there because most of the building are stone...that's what they tell me, anyway.

I certainly wouldn't do it...I remember my mom asking me when I would leave my son alone at home for a little while "for practice". He was 2 1/2! Uh...no!
