Does anyone know how to have a child evaluated by Early Intervention in Canada?

Not *exactly* daycare related because it involves my own son, but since it affects my daycare as a whole on a daily basis...

Anyway, I have always suspected my son to have "something amiss" but I've always been told to "wait and see", "he's young", etc. He has never seen anyone from Early Intervention. Does anyone know, in Canada, can you refer your own child?

I don't live in Canada, so I really can't answer your question, but I can say don't stop pushing until you get answers. Trust your instincts. You can always say, "Oh, I am so glad he was just young." You will regret NOT doing it. Hang in there.

I would talk to your family doctor. They will probably refer you to someone at the local children's hospital. Any one I know that has had early childhood intervention has always been under the care of the children's hospital.

Ugh, our family doctor is about as useful and receptive as a board with a nail in it. I've been fighting with him now for 5 months about his legs (unrelated, but still...). He says there's no problem, a retired specialist says otherwise. But of course, the retired specialist has no actual pull. Just an example, as far as his legs go. With the development, he keeps brushing me off and won't refer him to a specialist with that issue, either. Unfortunately we can't switch doctors because of the horrible doctor shortage here, you're pretty much stuck with your doctor and can't switch.

There is an early intervention program just down the road from where I live, we wouldn't have to go to the IWK children's hospital, so that would be good.

do you have a place where disabled kids go. Not a hospital or school but a place where they go for therapy. How about a speech place, call them ask them, they will tell you where you can go too. How old is your ds and what do find off. Also, do you have the ontario early years, call them too.

What about a duty doctor for a second opinion? Maybe you'll luck into someone who will refer you. Most of the programs are through the IWK even if they aren't on site. My step dd is special needs and her programs are varied and all over the place including physio at school when the other have gym.
