    Here We Go Again......

So back in July I terminated a family, 2 DC kids because mom did not want to pay me $35 a day for her son who was only here after school.
The way I figured it was, he is taking up a spot so she should pay me a full day for it. She refused, so I termed.

DC family # 2 now wants the same for their son. They only want to pay for the hour that he is here. They know I changed my contracts, agreed to pay me my rates when they signed my new contract in July and told me, we think you're worth it. Now they changed their minds

Dad said I know he takes up a spot in your dayhome and you need to make an income, so if you need to, fill his spot.

I should also mention that both families are kinda friends. My hubby wants me to ask them if this has anything to do with the other family. I don't think it matters, and they probably won't tell me if it does anyway.

WWYD? I can't believe this has happened again.

Do you not have school age spots? In my state we have two extra spots for school aged kids, so they are not taking up our FT spots. If you don't and can't give them a break, I would just remind them of your policy. I would also fill the spot if you can because it seems like it's a deal breaker for them. Sorry, that stinks!

I am only allowed 6 kids, not including my own in my dayhome. I have spots available.

I just feel like i've been kicked in the teeth for the second time.

They still have a daughter that comes here and spends the day with me.

They are a good family and have always been good with pay and policies and have been here for a year and a half.

Do you think that asking for $15.00 a day is fair? i feel like i am going back on my word and terminated the other family for no reason if I do this, But i have space that I can fill this time.

Why does it matter if it has anything to do with the other family or not? I would treat each and every situation individually.

If your policies state that a child is billed per day (taking up one full spot) regardless of hours actually attended, then I would charge that.

Sometimes I am willing to give a different rate for part-time attendance but only if I have the space to do it and only until I fill the spot with someone willing to pay the full day rate.

I would NOT go back on my word, especially since you just termed a family for the same reason. Start interviewing for a family that is willing to pay what you need and then let this other family go.

So you wouldn't be worried that these 2 families will talk and figure that I was unfair to the one family and not the other?

I should also mention that dcm#1 is still not working so I didn't see any point to holding a spot for kids that may or may not have shown up.

Nope, absolutely not concerned if they talk because the things I do in regards to my business are...well, MY business and because I look at it like htis; just because I am able to accomodate (or not) a specific situation or family at a certain point in time doesn't mean it will always be something I can or want to do.

For example, I had a DCM take a 3 week leave of absence from care last summer. I did NOT charge her for any of that time off (Although my policy handbook says she would have had to pay) because I happen to have a drop in family needing care at that same time so it worked out great for me. This summer, she wanted to take the same 3 weeks off but was billed for it because I had no one to fill the temporary spot.

So what once worked (or didn't work) won't always be the case, which is why I said to always look at each family and each situation individually and do whatever you can do if you want or don't do it if it doesn't work out. Make sense?

Absolutely makes sense. Thanks so much Blackcat.
