How To Tell When Illness Is Masked With OTC Medication

I know a lot of us have it in our PHB that we do not allow for parents to mask children's symptoms with any form of medication. It's ground for termination too.

My question is how can you tell if a childs symptoms have been masked???
What would I be looking for?

It wears off after naptime. For example, child is fine all morning and after nap or around 2pm when the medication wears off mysteriously the child has a fever .

You can't really tell if a child is sick if they are on medication, you have to wait for the medication to wear off.

Of course you know that every time a kid starts the cough and a runny nose its allergies right??

ugh that is what all the parents say.

I am just wondering this because I had a child come here earlier this week with "allergies" Well now all of the DCKs are sick with fevers.....

Yep that ****s. I have a policy that says that if you keep your sick child home that you have a 24 hour exclusion period (from when the symtom of exclusion dissapears without medication) and if I have to send the child home then the exclusion period doubles to 48 hours.

Magically now my DC parents now keep their kids home instead of trying to sneak them into DC with a dose of fever reducer. . And I'm really firm, I call the parents of the sick kiddos and ask if they still have a fever and whether or not they are taking meds.

I only had one DCM try it again after I enforced this policy. I had one DCM try to bring sick DCK on meds on a Monday and I sent home after nap the same day. She called me at 6pm on Tuesday morning and said that fever was gone and no meds were given and I told her that because of exclusion time she could bring her back on Thursday. Thursday came and DCK had fever after nap again . Well now you can't bring her till Monday ::. Never happened again. It was a good lesson for the other parents too

the kid never had a fever, I guess that is why I was trying to figure it all out. I did notice the sick kid from the start of the week, but no fever ever came about... At least never at my house....

If they come in at 7-8 and seem fine but by noon thye really wilt then theres a good chance the meds have worn off.
