I see that someone has a similar thread, but I didn't want to hijack it. I have a family with 2 little girls. They come 3 days a week and i don't give any free days. They pay the same no matter what unless it's a day that I have off. The one little girl has been sick and hasn't been here. The other little girl has been coming. Even though it's written in their contract that they pay, would anyone discount it because she's been sick for so long and can't come? I was thinking of a full pay for the little girl that has been coming and 1/2 pay for the other. Do you think I should discount at all or is what I am thinking good?

Do you have any kind of written policy on this that the parents have signed off on?
Unless my kids use a sick day, they pay. each child gets allocated a certain number of sick days for use throughout the year. basically, I calculate sick days based on how many days it is in their contract tht they require care. So, a full-time, 5 day a week child gets 5 sick days a year. A child that comes 3 days a week gets 3 sick days a year, and so on.
If all sick days are used, it doesn't matter how often the child is out sick, they need to pay to hold the space. It really is a shame that the child is not well, but at the same time, you are running a business. You are losing income on that space, waiting for the child to come back...not your fault. Charge full price. I would not hesitate to do so.- Flag

Thank you. Yes, I do have them sign a paper with all of my expectations on it including the pay whether they come or not. It's just that they've been put through the ringer with her being sick emotionally and I really like them. They haven't had any financial hardship as the dad can work from home and the grandparents have been helping. I just didn't know if anyone else would charge full price or discount anyway.- Flag

I think it depends on the situation. Sick with a stomach bug and out for a few days, no I wouldn't discount. Sick with something that causes them to be out longer than a week, yes, I would discount. I'm thinking of things like newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, heart surgery, menangitis, being hospitalized for an extended period of time.
Again, I think it depends on the situation.- Flag

You can discount it but don't feel like you have to. If you are feeling guilty you could throw in some free sick days in next year's contract. I have 5 free days in mine.

IF you discounted, make sure they know it is a temporary discount due to the current hardship of a prolonged illness and is not something that they should expect at all times.
However, since they signed a contract saying they would pay, I personally would not discount. I try to run my daycare like a business and that means keeping the rules the same for everyone at all times.- Flag

Me personally, if she was out longer than three days and had a doctor's note, yes I would and do offer a discounted rate for that. Because I know someone is most likely losing pay because of having to stay home with her or they are jumping through hoops so family can stay with her. I also agree with the others above, it is your business, you can do what you want to do. For me, I do what feels right for me- Flag
