A Horrible End to My Day !!!

My 2.5 DCB cut his forehead open while riding a tricycle. He came down my driveway which has a minor slope and crashed (intentially) into my DD bicycle which was lying on the ground.

Needless to say he hit his head on my DD bike and had about a one inch gash.

I am so upset (and worried)!! I will not sleep right for a few nights. So worried about the boy and what the parents must be thinking right now.

I am making changes today...we will not be playing on my driveway anymore, only on the grassy areas of my yard.

Maybe this change is coming too late...

Sorry to vent, but I am REALLY upset by this today.

Did he require medical attention? Be sure to file a report with licensing if he did.

Realize that this was an accident. Kids get rough and tumble and learn from getting booboos.

IMHO, you cannot keep kids in a bubble. Licensing told me that I could not use a velcro wall to keep them safe. (Yes, I did ask while joking with my analyst.)

ALSO, IMHO, kids are getting obese from not running and playing, not from drinking 2% milk instead of 1%.

Thanks Sharlan. This happened RIGHT before closing time, so mom was 2 minutes away. Sfe is at the hospital now with him. Do I still need to notify licensing?

What we do is have parents fill out an accident report stating what happened, who witnessed it and the medical attention you gave. We have the parents sign and date report and we send it in to our licensing people.

As for not letting them play on the driveway, that is your choice, but like PP mentioned you can't keep them in a bubble. Make sure you remove hazards (or have dck's do it) as they play to minimize accidents. But even still accidents will happen.

What about the 4 yr old who went on the slide, was being silly while going down, fell over the side and broke his arm? (another provider) She didn't say, oh no, can't bring them to the park now! You do what you can, asses each childs development and thresh hold for trouble and give appropriate activities!
        Good luck!

Yes, I also have the accident reports. I think I was so traumatized by it all that I just thought "well we won't do that any more".

My DD bike was far off to the side out of the way of traffic. DCB wanted to crash into it and steered his bike right into the bike rear. I guess the impact off the rubber tire was enough to cause him to fall forward on the bike.

Sorry this happened, I can imagine how restless you must be about it. I would be a nervous wreck over it too. Isn't that always the time though that accidents happen?! That last 30 min. before pick up I'm always on high alert for fights and accidents, they're bouncing off the walls and they're just DONE.

In California, if a child in your care needs to see a physician for an "unusual incident" that occurred while in care, we are required to notify licensing within 36 hours.

I'm sorry that happened. I wouldn't forbid driveway play, but perhaps forbid crashing of bikes and other vehicles. Accidents happen; it's part of childhood. I'm sure the parents are just thinking, "omg BOY"

I had a girl put her tooth through a lip while chasing someone. First one fell then second one, then the girl and she hit person in fronts head with her mouth. Cried 5 min and then off to play!

Ok, I will call licensing in the morning. Thanks for letting me know! Sharlan mentioned this too.

Yes, you have to file a LIC 624. You must notify licensing within the next day and file the written report within 7 days.

Don't beat yourself up too badly, KIDS GET HURT PLAYING. They need to run and play. They need to expend some energy. As a aparent, I would be happy that my kids were outside playing, getting some fresh air, rather than sitting on the couch watching tv.

My neighbors have a daycare and I haven't seen or heard the kids outside playing since last Halloween when they came over to check out our decorations.

Poor guy! (and poor you!) Nothing needing medical attention has happened in my home yet, but with kids, it WILL happen someday I am sure. You really can't beat yourself up over it. ((((HUGS))))

I wouldn't end the driveway riding, but I would require them to wear a helmet.
