California Pre Licensing Fire Clearance Question

Does anyone know if the pre-licensing fire clearance inspection in California is announced or unannounced? Do they let you know when they are coming or they just show up at you door? What if I am not at home if they come unannounced, what do they do?

Mine have always been announced. They call and schedule it based on my availability every year. I do beleive it varies by area though. I would call the fire marshall and ask.
