What would you do? (from a newbie!)

Good morning! I need advice on a sticky situation, and wondered what would you do! After doing HDC for the past 3 years, I have decided to accept a position teaching again. In accepting this position it gave me exactly 2 weeks notice for my 3 families, in which I was going to be loosing 2 of my 3 the end of Aug. because of school starting and the other moving.

The family that was going to stay with me is my main reason of returning to teaching!!! (I'm sure you all have had that ONE mom you tolerate because you feel for the kid, or because you know she really just needs the guidance.) I have had this now almost 3 year old since she was 10 mo, and before she came to me she had been with 4 other sitters! EEK!

OK, I could go on and on about this mom, but will spare you the details! Last week she informed me I owe her a refund of $263.00 since she pays me for the month, and I will only have had her 13 days. Here is my conflict, I have cut her a deal, she could only afford to pay $600.00 a month instead of my $150.00 a week. I told her it's basically $150.00 a week, and if there is a 5th week in the month, is basically free. I have tried to do the math, and have no idea where she got her numbers! I want to offer her a refund of $150.00.... do you feel that is fair?

(I provide ALL her food, activities cost, needs here at my home. I have never raised my rates, and have only used half a sick day!)

I'm looking forward to your input, thank you in advance for your opinion!

Take the $600 for the month. Divide by the number of weekdays. For August that is 23 care days.

She is paying $26.09 per care day.

How many days were her children in care for the month? _____
      Multiply that by $26.09 ______ x $26.09 = Y

      $600 - Y = Her refund.

It seems like she calculated as if her kids were in care for 13ish days. Is that right?

          I got $260 as well

          23 care days in August.

          $600/23 days = $26 per day

          $26 X 13 days = $338

          $600 - $338 = $262

Problem is....when you give a discount to a family....that is their norm. They do not see it as a discount anymore. Unless you have in writing that you were giving the last week free....I would say you are kind of hooped. If you had a conversation about the last week being free....you could always try to say..."Hey, last week is free, so there would actually be XX care days, so a refund would be....$_____. But be prepared to show her YOUR math to back it up.

THIS situation is THE reason I do not EVER give a discount to ANY family. They don't see it as a discount, they see it as their norm and then they also think they are "special" and can have special treatment.

I feel that if you can't afford my excellent service, then you can't afford it. PERIOD. No discounts.
