    Worried

My daughter is starting Cosmetology school in a little over a week and I will be keeping my granddaughter (4mths) full time while she does. My concern is that while my gd is exclusively breastfed she would previously take a bottle of breast milk no problem. My daughter hadn't attempted to feed her from the bottle for about a month and here recently while she was running errands I tried to give her a bottle and she refused. I tried several more times over the next few days, with different bottles and in different positions and she always refuses it. In fact, it makes her really mad. I went online for advice and nothing seems to work. I haven't kept her for more than 3 hrs thus far but will be keeping her 8.5 hrs a day very soon. Anyone have any experience with this? I'd certainly be appreciative of any advice.

No experience but go to kellymom.com. Great info on main board, and also a great forum. You should get a ton of advice.

The bottle needs to be introduced more by anyone that can feed her. I had one who wouldn't eat the whole time he was here because they introduced the bottle so late. She may get hungry enough with you that she will eat!

Try a cup! This happened with my dcb and that is the ONLY thing that worked. The two handled 'first sippy' style cup worked great for him. It wasn't a complete 'no leak' cup, so he got the idea pretty quick! Good luck!

When she is hungry she will eat but that is hard on you. 3 hours may not have been long enough for her to be hungry enough. She was holding out for mom. She may also drink very little for you and nurse like crazy at night for mom. I have had kidlets like that.
Very soon though you will be able to feed cereal and vegies and life will change in her world. I would also try a cup like another poster stated.

That is definitely not always true.

OP, please don't make her wait it out until she is hungry enough.

Some babies really need to learn how to drink from a nipple consistently in order for them to get it.

I would have your DD start having other people feed her with a bottle more frequently.

Please do not simply wait until she is hungry enough to take a bottle......4 months is awfully young to make her wait....

I would start by trying to "sneak" in the bottle when she is already nursing. This will obv have to be done by mom at home unless she is comfortable with you being present since you are family. I would do this with both my kids. Start with nursing, then quickly switch to a ready bottle. We used Breastflow or medela. Both worked great. Also, seemed to help if you did this near nap or bed, they are too tired to protest then .

After doing this a few times each day/night our kids transitioned to using the bottle sometimes and nursing sometimes.

And like someone else said, I would be PROACTIVE and try before they are starving because once they get worked up they really want comfort from their mom in the most comfortable/familiar (for them) manner which right now is nursing.

I had this problem with my daughter. She refused to take a bottle. I went to a concert one night and was gone for 7 hours (1hr drive to, 1hr drive home, dinner in the town of the concert, and the actual concert). My husband could only get her to eat 2oz the entire time I was gone. We tried every combination of bottle when she was first born, but she wasn't having it. We then tried the Adiri Bottle It worked!!! She still wouldn't take a bottle from me, but she would take this bottle from my husband and my mom.

OK I'm going to be the weird one here. Try either wearing or throwing a T-shirt that your daughter has worn over your front while you're feeding her. The smell of Mom is very comforting and familiar. It's worth a try.

Dr browns bottle worked for a baby that was exclusively breast fed and then sent to daycare. She wouldn't eat all day or barely ate until she tried the dr brown bottles.
