    I Made Butter!

I'm such a nerd. The first picture is DD shaking it (sorry for the messy hair and pj's, it's bed time, ), the second is our butter and the third is DD's stamp of approval. The fourth is DS, 'cause he's stinkin' cute.

It's gooooooood. I get cream from Costco and needed to use some up. 1/2 gallon of heavy ORGANIC cream for about $7. It's about to go sour, and then I'm going to try making sour cream butter (apparently European Style?).

    Cool! And cute kids
My husband n I buy real butter all the time...never considered organic. Wouldn't this be a good project for preschoolers... They love things they can create and eat

Yep! It's super easy too. You just put some heavy cream in a jar and shake it up. Took me about ten, maybe fifteen minutes of shaking. You can add a small marble or two to help speed up the process. First you'll make whipped cream, and if you continue past that point the cream "breaks" and suddenly you're shaking around a lump of butter sloshing in buttermilk!

You can also make it in a blender if you're doing it for yourself.

It really doesn't take that long. Do it often and you'll build up arm strength! ::

Honestly though it didn't hurt things to stop once in a while--I was showing DD the progress. She did some of it but I did most of it. Sometimes I shook with one arm, sometimes with the other, sometimes with both...

I looooove homemade butter. I don't often make it myself because there are vendors at our market that sell it for a very reasonable price....so reasonable it's often as cheap as the grocery store for a good butter.

PS Very, very, very cute kids!

Can you add a pinch of salt to it?

we make butter every year along with homemade corn break. we add a little bit of honey to the butter and the kids love it on the cornbread.

when we make it, it makes me really think of that commercial about the shake weight.........whole lotta shakin goin on!!! that's our song we shake it to.

Cool!! We have done this before too!

I also used a jar and passed it around the circle and everyone got a chance to shake it up.

The kids loved doing it and then we ate it on graham crackers for snack.

One little guy refused to eat it because he said it wasn't really butter and when I asked him why he said, "because it doesn't have corners" ::::

Yes, you can absolutely add salt to it. You can also do honey, herbs, other spices, garlic.....

haha, Blackcat...no corners. THat's FUNNY! And also, slightly sad because it underscores how far removed children today are from the "real" sources of food :/
