    What would you do?

I have two parents that have lost their phones in the past month. So no way to get ahold of them!

One was late this morning-3 hours and I had no way of getting ahold of them.

Another was working at a site with no phone service-remodeling a house. If there was an emergency I would have had no way of getting a message to them.

What would you do in cases like this?

It is actually part of our regulations that a parent be "accessible" at ALL times OR provide the name and number of a person/contact that is willing to take responsibility for the child.

I don't think I would be comfortable taking care of a child with no way of contacting the parent.

I have back up numbers for the kids but they aren't going to know why someone is running late in the morning.

It now explains when I have sent text about things there was no response.

I know it is probably next to impossible to do, but I would tell the parents they MUST have a phone to be able to tell you when they are running late. I think you can get a cell phone and those pre-paid cards with minutes for fairly cheap now days. They need to then use the minutes to contact you only.

I have a mom who was like this and I required her to have the pre-paid phone but she kept telling me she didnt have any minutes left because she was calling her friends and who knows where else so I finally had to tell her that I would not take her child without being able to contact her.

Two times I actually made her stand in my entry way while I dialed her cell to double check it was actually in service and that she really did have it. I told her the first time I had to contact her and she was unreachable, would be the last time I would care for her child.

NEVER had a problem with her since.

I know it is a tough situation to be in, but you gotta do what you gotta do in order to be safe and all. Plus you have every right to know when some one is going to be late for eithr drop off and/or pick up times. You have a phone so it shouldn't be your problem. Kwim?

This is why I'm still a big advocate for landlines!

so how did the first person call work and let them know that they were going to be 3 hours late. And what about the second one, contractors are always on the phone.

The first one may have used husbands but nothing even from him on child arriving late or answering text when I have texted, so I'm not sure. Second one isn't a contractor, just remodling a house that they own.

In TN, licensing requires us to have back-up contacts as well. Most of the time this works, if not, I let the parent know I HAVE to be able to contact someone in case of emergency. So far, so good!
