Child Not Fully Emptying Bladder During Potty

My 20 month old has been asking to go potty. She is able to stay dry and is asking to go, but she is only eliminating a little bit at a time. This is resulting in her asking to go every 20 minutes, which is difficult while watching the other kids and not to mention pregnancy exhaustion. I do not want to discourage her from continuing to stay dry and asking to go potty, but I need help coming up with a solution so he can empty her bladder completely during each sitting. I am concerned about UTIs. Ideas?

If you're sure it's not just an issue of her being too young then I would assume she's got a UTI or bladder/kidney infection.

It's awful tough for a child that young to stop their stream mid void even if they really want to. I can't imagine she's doing it intentionally repeatedly.

Does she have a fever at all?

Is she complaining of any discomfort or running fever? Maybe she has a small bladder or not drinking enough to actually urinate a lot at once?

She's definitely not sick, and she definitely is ready. She may have a small bladder- she is very small for her age.

Does she have to poop? Aside from a UTI that's all I can think of.

She does it when she poops too. Yesterday we took 4 trips in 10 mins so she could get all the poop out. She will go, then say all done and jump off, then as soon as I go to put her pants on she flips out and says more potty. And she goes again. But she won't stay seated to finish all at once. So frustrating.

Sounds like she's either in a hurry to get off the potty or she doesn't recognize that she's not done until she gets off. Probably a combo of both. I think she will figure it out though with time.

I'm potty-training a 2-yr old girl now, and what I will do is turn on the sink, fill my drink cup, pour it out from about 6 inches above the sink (making a nice "waterfall" for her to see), then fill it up and pour it out again and again. I will also drink a cup of it. She watches with interest and I think it relaxes her muscles so she can let it ALL out. It's just a visible que, and may not work on all kids.

For pooping, I make it fun by telling her, kind of "secret" like, "can you do some toots for me?" We laugh and put our hands over our mouth like we're doing something sneaky, and she tries to toot (fart), and that helps get the poops out. This is silly, but I even sort of demonstrate by kind of sticking my bum out and making a face like I'm pushing. She laughs and then tries it herself. (Wow, that was embarrassing to type!! LOL)

Lucy, those are excellent ideas! I think they will be very helpful, can't wait to try!
