Hi Everyone! I'm getting ready for my pre inspection for my home daycare in California, but they are very vague! Help please... For all my cleaning supplies and other chemicals is it okay to leave them under the sink cabinet with a childproof latch or do I need to move them to a high cabinet? What about the chemicals in the garage which is an off limits zone, do I still need to put those away? For baby proofing I know I need outlet covers and latches for drawers and cabinets, anything else? I want to pass with flying colors but they don't provide me enough information. Thanks!
Inspection Checklist???

Welcome to the forum!! Yes California is notoriously vague. It really depends on your licensor. For my preinspection I took all chemicals and put them in a high kitchen cabinet with a lock. Then my inspector said if I would like I could keep them under the sink with a lock. The garage is fine if it's off limits, however I was required to put in a new keyed deadbolt lock and it's required to be locked during daycare hours. Still make sure all hazardous materials are up high in the garage just to be on the safe side. Good luck !!- Flag

For the garage, it can only be considered truly off limits if it has a deadbolt. Even so, my analyst inspects mine. Same thing applies for garage, toxic chemicals need to be a minimum of five feet off the floor and in a doored cupboard. I keep all of my yard supplies, etc. in a locked shed outside. The only "chemicals" in my gargae are laundry soap, etc. Oh, BTW, be sure to clean the lint trap in your dryer before your inspection....it is supposed to ALWAYS be clean because of the risk of fire!
This goes for bathrooms as well....toothpaste, shampoo, hairspray, perfume, nail polish remover, etc. all need to be in cupboards five feet off the floor OR the bathroom must be innaccessible to children.
A few other items in the kitchen that will get you dinged: foil, saran wrap, etc, with sharp edges for cutting the paper cannot be in reach of children. Knives must be a minimum of five feet off the floor. Your fire extinguisher should NOT be in the kitchen....this is where a fire is most likely to occur and you may not be able to get to the extinguisher. Plastic bags....garbage bags, grocery store bags etc. must be at least five feet off the floor.
Bottom line is, if a child can get injured in any way, shape, or form, put it UP!!!!
Good luck on your licensing!- Flag
