So Tired Of The Excuse "Well, THAT"S What She Wanted To Wear!"

Just a vent. One of my pet pieves. I've heard this so many times with so many different families; "Well, THAT's what he wanted to wear!" I don't understand why parents allow their children to wear things that have negative physical effects on their children!

Today, DCG walks in with long sleeve shirt and long pants on! Our high today was 95F. It was 85F when she was dropped off. I didn't even have a chance to comment on it, because DCD is totally a "Drop and Run" guy. He pushes them in the door, comments on his struggle to get his son to wear shoes today; and walks off. I immediately put DCG in her backup clothes (thankfully it was shorts and a t-shirt). I didn't even notice until she had taken her shoes off and had to put them back on that her shoes were also TWO sizes too small! She was wearing the same size shoe as her brother today, and he is over two years younger!! I literally had to unlace them to even get them back on her feet. There was nothing I could do about that one b/c I didn't have an extra pair of shoes for her, and my kids are not her size.

When DCD picked them up, DCD sees that his daughter is wearing different clothes. Here is how the conversation went:

DCD: "I see you must have been playing in the water today."
Me: "No, we didn't. What makes you think that?"

He looks at his daughter's different clothes

DCD: "She is wearing different clothes."
Me: "Aaaahhh. Yes. She came today wearing long sleeves and long pants!!"
DCD: "Well, that's what she wanted to wear."
Me: "That is NOT okay here. It is WAY too hot to be wearing long sleeves and long pants. We play outside a lot."

And today DCD's son (22 mos) climbed out of his pack n play for the first time after nap. I texted both DCM & DCD to give them a heads up since he most likely will climb out of his crib next; and to let them know that he will be sleeping on a nap mat here from now on. DCD texted me back right away and said "Yes, we know he can climb out of a pack n play. He doesn't climb out of his crib though." WHAT?? DCD KNOWS he sleeps in a pack n play here and didn't bother to tell me that he climbs out of his at home?? Oh boy.

I had this exact same convo with a mom a couple of weeks ago.

DCG, DCB and DCM walk in. DCG is wearing a long-sleeve shirt and jeans on a 105 degree day.

Me: Good morning, DCG. Wow, you're going to be pretty hot today!
DCM: Oh, she wanted to wear that.

I gave up that battle. If they seem uncomfortable, I change them. If they dont, I leave it. If I don't have extra's, they have to sit down or stay in.

I have one DCD that does this sometimes but in his defense he always brings the proper clothing in a bag and apologizes. Some mornings he needs to pick his battles with this one and I don't mind because he isn't clueless about it, kwim?

I think you were very sweet to change the child into more comfortable/appropriate clothing. happyface It was extremely hot yesterday.

Yes, I do understand about choosing your battles with kids!! IMO, parents should always think, "Will it cause any harm to this child" prior to choosing the battle though.

When it comes to wearing winter clothes while being outside in heat that is almost 100F given the humidity factor; or when it comes to allowing a child to wear shoes WAY too small and possibly hinder their bone development; as a parent you have to CHOOSE to fight that battle!! For the sake of your child's health!!

Its finally up in the high 80's to 90's here! YEAH!!!!! Anyway, I have one that will come in heavy jeans and a thermal longsleeved shirt. Same thing, thats what he wants to wear.

They do bring changes of clothes-shorts/short sleeved shirt but we are usually headed out the door when they get here so we have to wait for the child to change.

Then after we change and get outside and play the child is usually dirty. So I have to have them change back into the jeans/heavy shirt for the second part of the day. I do hang on to the shorts/short sleeved shirt so that I will start having something cooler for them to change into for the afternoon.

I agree to a point. If they are bringing extra on top of what their child wanted to wear for the day, I really wouldn't think much of it. If they brought them without an extra set though, and they had no backup, then that is something that isn't ok, that is something I would call a parent for, they'd have two choices 1-drop off new clothing, or 2-take their child home and let them get heatstroke at their house.

OT-my youngest DD ran around in the house yesterday with a tank top, swimsuit bottom, and snow boots, she said she was having a fashion show. :: Since we are at home, and have a really laid back week with only one other DCG, I didn't really fight her on it.

This also drives me crazy!!!! I have one DCP that has said that to me quite a few times. During the winter the child would come in running shoes and a thin rain coat (it was at least -10C and snowing). Or when it was just pouring out and cold the child would be wearing flip flops and no coat! I have no problem if this is what the child has decided to wear (and once they are out they can realize that hey I need to wear a coat and different shoes) but come on bring proper clothes in a seperate bag so that the child can be properly dressed for the weather. I also have extra clothes for the children if they need it.

We normally see this in the winter because some winters are very mild. But there are times when the high will only get in the 40s and there will be kids coming in wearing capris and/or flip flops. Most mornings they won't even have a coat or hat so we have to scramble to find extra jackets so they can go out to play.
