How do you handle little boo-boos in your daycare/Preschool?

We send home and accident report for anything that leaves a mark (whether it be a temporary red mark, a bruise, a scrape, heads falling off, etc. ).
However, if a child trips his/her own two feet and there are no visible mark then no accident report is sent home. I thought I was doing well.

A Mom told me this morning, "Child has a bruise on child's arm. I don't know if you are rough housing here, or if it was from time spent wrestling with Dad."
"We do not rough house here."
"Ok. Well, I guess it could be from Dad. But, I wanted you to know that he has a bruise."
There was no bruise on Friday, so I am also assuming it is from playing with Dad.

The bruise is the size of a dime on the child's upper arm.

I wouldnt worry about it. It sounds like you are being very thorough in documenting any accident outside of the typical spills that kids that age do. Some parents are just quick to blame the daycare but you can just say "Any bruise of that size would have been documented. There is no documentation from Friday so it most certainly happened with Dad".

When parents nit pick about little thinks like this I down play the whole thing. I let them know that bruises and scrapes happen and there is no way to know how each and every one happens.(referring to preschoolers) the younger the child the more parents seem to ask about these small marks. It sounds like you are doing all the right documentation.

I got a call today because the creases behind the child's knees were pink.
I'm assuming it's from sitting in the child's carseat on the way home.

I let Mom know that children are rough and tumble at this age and get marks and bruises. Red marks are most likely impressions made from various objects that the child sat on/laid on and will fade quickly.

that is so weird...what on earth did she think to gain by asking that? :confused::confused::confused:

That's the level of "concern" where I start wondering whether it is in my best interest to keep the child. If something really does happen (child trips and falls against a tree, child trips and lands on their own head, child suddenly gets a bloody nose...) what are the parents going to think? And worse--what repercussions will there be for you?

I was wondering the same thing to my husband (business partner) yesterday. He said the next time she says something he's going to have a sit down talk with her while I tend the other children.

Oddly enough, the child's first week here there was a more "serious" boo-boo. The child walked right into another child's puzzle and it gave him a bruise the size of a pinky finger directly under the eye. Mom said he is always walking into things or tripping over things.
The bruise had a scab on it 3 days later. :confused: Nothing dramatic ever came from that, but perhaps it was because it was the first mark.

I have never met or spoken to Dad. He wrestles with him, though, so I don't think marks phase him.

Honestly, I was taken aback by the phone call. It was 10 minutes after they left, and 10 minutes before closing time. I was trying to tend to the children and start the getting ready to go home process while talking to her. Towards the end, I had nothing more to say so I said nothing to her and spoke to the children. She said, "I know it's weird, but if someone asks me what that mark/bump/bruise is from I don't want to tell them I don't know." :confused:

OMG, that is tooooo much! I can certainly understand wanting to know where all the "boo boos" came from, but asking about the pink creases is crazy!! Oh boy. Your hubby definitely needs to chat with her about it next time she says something.

We discussed it today. It went pretty well.

You know it's bad when you strip down a child during a potty break to look for anything pink/bruised/scratched that is different from when they came in. I've never had to look over a child so thoroughly before.
