In Home - How Do You Do Diaper Changes?

I know that at centers there are very specific procedures, but how do in home daycare people do their diapering routines?

Do you change everyone at the same set times?
Do you wear gloves?
How do you sanitize/wash your hands between each change?
How you you disinfect the changing area between each change?

I'm trying to better learn what I should be doing and how to be efficient and most preventitive about spreading germs, as I still haven't quite ironed out the best way for myself.

As far as sanitary things, the state has guidelines on that. I dont use gloves, but whether or not I did, I would, and am required to wash my hands and the child's hands each time. I wipe the changing table each time with a non bleach (just in case its not dry) disinfectant and make sure it kills on contact, not 10 minutes later.

I usually change the kids at around 930-10 unless they need it before and again after lunch, then after nap and everyone is done again at 5. I check after that to make sure they are dry for pick up. of course always on demand if doody calls! Then I wrap the stinkies in a plastic bag and throw it right in the outside garbage.

I wipe the changing pad between each change with a non bleach Clorox wipe thing. I wash my hands and the kids hands after.

Cloth diapers are stored in bags. Disposables are tossed.

I change dcb every 2 hours. Dd is changed when wet (close to potty training).

I have the same problem with my iPhone and iPad. I fixed most of the error but could not figure out what the last word was. :confused:

My diaper changing pad is in the bathroom (I have a long counter) which makes everything convenient. I follow the state rules for licensed child care centers. I worked as a regulator for several years, so I am very consistent on following the diaper-changing rules, despite being legally unlicensed.

I get the supplies out (diaper, wipes and gloves), put the child on the pad, put on the gloves, undress and remove the soiled diaper, wipe the child with their individual wipes, wrap the diaper in the gloves as I'm wrapping the diaper, dispose of the diaper, put on a clean diaper and re-dress, wash the child's hands, put the child down, spray the pad with a bleach solution, then wash my hands. I do this for every child, even if that means I wash my hands 3 times within a matter of minutes. I change diapers on a schedule of every 2 hours (or more frequently if the diaper is soiled between scheduled diaper changing times).

I have a changing set up in the bathroom. I pull out everyones diapers, wipes and the bleach mixture we are required to use (all are put away under sink). I line up all the kids, change one, spray, wipe, wash and re- glove, get the next kid, spray wipe, etc. I like using disposable gloves.

Everyone arrives here at 730-8 so I do diaper changes at 9:30-10 before outside time, noon before bed, 3 after nap, and the occassional one when someone poops in between.

I have the same problem with my iPhone and iPad. I fixed most of the error but could not figure out what the last word was. :confused:

I check and change children every 1.5 - 2 hours. Have you checked out the FCCERS guidelines on diaper changes????? IT is totally crazy! If we did all of that, I would have to hire someone to do nothing else but diapers! I sanitize after and wash hands, but the guidelines are a bit much!

I do not wear gloves.

I get out a plastic bag, open the drawer containing diapers/wipes, lay the child on the changing table, remove their soiled or wet diaper, put it in the bag, throw the bag away in the trash can, put on a clean diaper, re-dress the child, spray down the table, and then we go to the restroom to wash hands (and faces if they got messy in the 2 hours between diaper changes).

Okay I don't want to come across as a horrible terrible dirty nasty provider because I totally am NOT! I clean my house every single day, constantly wiping down tables, vaccuuming, mopping, etc.

So please don't think I'm horrible in saying I'm quite surprised everyone seems to be saying they change diapers every 2 hours!!! I've never heard of such a thing!!! I cloth diapered my own child until 6 months old and I know I'm crazy, but I practice elimination communication aka infant potty learning and so my 9 month old honestly pees on the potty a few times a day and poops on the toilet daily too. As a result, he's usually very lightly wet/dry, and I change him very often.

When I started my daycare I had never used disposables and the only thing I'd heard was that they get changed every 4 hours, and most parents told me I should change their kid 3 times in 10 hours which I was horrified by but seemed the norm.

So I change everybody about ever 3-4 hours, except poopies i change immediately. Am I completely wrong here? Am I really supposed to change them every 2??? I thought cloth gets changed every 1-2 hours and 'sposies' every 4ish???

NO you're not weird! Not IMO anyway. I change sposies when they are noticeably full, and I change cloth when they feel wet/damp. Some kids, this is every two hours. a couple I changed (SPOSIES) every time they peed it seemed because their diapers stank something fierce. My son, even in cloth, only gets changed every 3ish hours because he just doesn't pee that often.

And GOOD FOR YOU!!!! on the EC. I'm really interested in it but haven't had the time to dedicate to trying with either child. Maybe the next baby...I've been thinking about seeing what would happen if I tried with DS but I think he's too old

And honestly, that's what I always heard too--cltoh 1-2, sposie 3-4. I HATE changing a mostly dry sposie.

Thanks Silver, yay, someone else who's heard of EC! Yes, I've been putting my son on the toilet since he was 5 weeks old and he's now almost 10 months. It's hard to do having 5 other kids all day for daycare but I still do it as much as I'm able, plus the other dcks think it's hilarious to watch the baby use the toilet!

And yes, you read it right. A few years ago I lived by Glen Echo park in Clintonville. I'm not there anymore, but it's still my email and name for most things. I know live in Worthington/Powell. Nice to meet a neighbor provider!
