    How Hot Is Too Hot???

Is there a cut off temp where you don't take the kids outside?

Yesterday we did outside water play in the morning when temps were in the high 80's, by afternoon it was about 97 degrees with 90% humidity and full sun, no shade. We very briefly went outside in the afternoon but in my opinion it was too hot and the air was just horrible so we came in after just a few minutes. Everyone was so relieved to be back in the a/c and drank full cups of water in seconds. Today is supposed to be even hotter, I am thinking we will just skip outside time today.

Humidity and heat index are my guides more than temperature. 95 can be pleasant with minimal humidity, and 80 can be gross with 90% humidity.

mid-90s with awful humidity (70%+) is near my cut-off, and definitely once the heat index gets above 100 degrees or there's a heat advisory on, we don't go out.

But that's based on the CURRENT temperature, not the HIGH for the day I had one family that didn't want us to go out if the HIGH was in the 90s, even if it was a positively glorious 70-80 until 11 or noon. They absolutely could NOT understand that the forecast for later did not represent the conditions for the entire period from dawn to dusk--or at least, that's how they behaved.

There's also a chart that some people go by. I use common sense and hate referring to charts about things like that. If it's uncomfortable or they aren't enjoying it, don't go out.

the last 3 days the humidity has been so bad, so no we are not going outside. I think common sense over rules any chart.

You've got to get them out first thing in the morning if you're going to do it at all.

I took my dog for a walk already this morning - it was just under 80*. That's it for him today.

If you have sprinklers going and kiddie pools they can go out for a while. Just make sure you bring a nice jug of drinking water out there and the kids have to have sunblock if you have no shade.

BTW - Humuggity is 66% at the moment here.

We just came in from an hour outside and will be in for the day now. Too hot. 97* expected here and no ac in the schools so I kept my older two home too.

yeah, I'm not going by any chart... my cut off was definitely the temps we hit yesterday, LOL!!!

its not even 9am and its already 84 (feels like 89) w/66% humidity here - so yeah, we'll be going out in the sprinkler for a bit this morning but will be in with the a/c cranking by 11am!!

Our state has guidelines we are supposed to follow but I just use common sense. Instead of our outdoor play in the afternoon I switch to morning when we are usually inside doing our free play. The play area is shaded most all day but this weather with the humuggity so high it never is very nice.

The afternoons are delightful in the basement, you can feel the blessed cool as you walk down the stairs step by step getting cooler even though the main floor is air conditioned.
                I see little people.

We were not going out yesterday. As of 7am this morning it is 30 degrees C (86 F)with the humidity, and is expected to climb to 44 C (111 F) with the humidity. It's the humidity that stops us. I am ok going out at 30-35 degrees and having some water play but when the humidity is high and it's hard for the kids to breath we stay in. We are also under a humidex advisory right now.

That is stinkin hot for so early in the mornin, do you guys live on the sun?! It's only 55 here, we have a high of 96 today, but probably wont hit that until about noon-1:00!
I always do my outdoor play in the morning, but it consists of a walk to the park, and staying there for about 45 minutes.

I agree with everyone else, common sense should be your judge on how hot is too hot.
Something to keep in mind: (From SafeKids.Org)
A child’s body heats up 3 times faster than an adult’s body, their internal systems to regulate body temperature are not fully developed, and they absorb heat and generate heat under stress more quickly than adults.
If you feel like it's too hot, oh boy, are they feeling like that too.

I go based on feeling and take into consideration our activities outside and how the kids look. I've been limiting it to 15-30 minutes outside and first thing in the morning since it's been so hot!! When the high is above 114, we usually don't go out at all (luckfully only happens about 5-10 work days a year, but this summer seems like it might be a hot one).

Today, it's 86 right now at 7 am and the forecast says it will be 100 by 11 am and 113 as a high. We will probably go out at 9 am for 15 minutes or so.

I'm kicking myself today. Yesterday I was asking if y'all lived on the sun, and it's 7:56 and already 78 outside. ::

Not many people here stay inside-no matter what the heat is! We have such long, long gloomy weather that everyone loves to be outside for the 2-3 months we have nice weather.

Today-its very overcast (gray/black sky) and forcasted to pour for the next 3 days. Thats what keeps us in here is the rain, rain, rain-

We are usually outside all morning long, with walks, outside play(when the weather is nice). Lunchtime we come in and then take naps. After nap we have another snack then head back outside. Well we will unless I still have little ones napping-. My little ones play hard all morning long and then just conk for hours at naptime. All my parents are fine with it because they do the same at home and still go to bed at a very descent hour because they play hard at night too.
