    Swings?

I have never had a swing set. I have two climbers, seesaw, playhouse and a picnic table outside. I have avoided swings for fear of injuries. Those of you that have them, can you tell me how and what type of injuries have occured. What do you you use as a fall zone under the swings? Pros? Cons? My climbers are getting old and faded, was.considering the Step 2, climber/swing combo.

I have a small swing set and my kids here are baby thru 4 years old. Occasionally there is a little bump or fall but nothing major (knock on wood). there is just grass under the set.

So somebody walking in front of someone else swinging and getting clocked in the face with feet is not a daily occurence? Maybe I just worry too much. Thanks Cheerful!

its so rare that I have any issues. Its usually the older kids who don't listen. I have 3 sets, 2 are for the older kids and one is for the littles this way I avoid accidents. I have grass under 2 and peastones for the littles.

You set it up so it is not in a walk way to something else. And you teach them not to walk in front of the swings. We also practice a quick stop. If a toddler comes near the swing zone we say STOP and everyone stops and waits. ( while they yell at the toddler)

In all my years I have had one bad accident with a swing set . It was an old metal set with one of those lawn swing things. WhAP and the child needed stiches. BUT Now you rarely see those and if I had one I would take it off. Swings only. They need to be the soft ruber kind. The set needs to be anchored and no standing on the swings.

Nope. My youngest are 2.5, 22 months and 13 months. They all move around the swing set, even the 13 month old that is not even walking yet. The only one that has ever gotten hit like that was my special needs girl.....who has issues with awareness and observation anyway. Now she isnt allowed to use the swings because she personally cannot handle the type of play involved. But that is the only one ever to have a problem with the swing set.

I think you will love having them ~ my dck's love the swings!

I started with one of those wooden put together kits from the home improvement store; two swings, a slide and a teeter totter that we removed for a baby swing. Over the last 15 years we have added a tube slide/climbing tower with three more swings, climbing rope, rock wall and a picnic table ( all purchased from craigslist for CHEAP happyface ) and put the teeter totter back on. This set up is for the older 3's and up. It only has grass around it, with rubber mats under the swings. On the other side of the yard is a Step 2 Swing/Slide/Climber combo that has two baby swings on it. This is for the young 3's and under. This set has a pretty thick fall zone around it (rubber mulch)

I have only had one serious injury; that was a school ager who broke the cardinal rule of the swingset...NO JUMPING OFF THE SWINGS! He landed wrong and broke his arm. He was the older sib of one of my regular kids, only here for the week before school started

As long as safety rules are followed, I don't see the harm in a swingset. Enjoy!

We built a custom set last year. nothing fancy just a wooden A frame set with three swings, two baby swings, and a horse swing that fit twoo kids back to back.

We teach them not to walk in front or behind. When little are just learning this I make sure anyone swinging shows me they can make a quick stop. There is NO standing in swings, NO bumper cars, NO swinging backwards, NO going super high, and I never push kids. If you can't 'pump' they swing on their belly. #1 rule NEVER JUMP OFF!!! I had a classmate in 3rd grade break his arm this way and have been terrified ever since.

I don't want to jinx it so I will only say we have always really enjoyed our safe swing set

We have had swings since day one. I loved the swings when I was a kid and have always thought that kids and swings go together. However I do have very strict rules for the swing area. No standing on swings, pushing other kids in swings, twisting swings, swinging too high, jumping off swings, running around swing area, swinging without hanging on, ect. I have all littles (under five) most of the time and so because of their young ages we are all on the swings or nobody is on the swings. We have a specific time set up for swinging and the rest of the time we are playing on the other toys or in the sandbox. All kids under three are in swings that have a restraint system and three and up can use the regular swings and learn to swing themselves. Because my swings are so close to my fence my insurance agency made me buy swings that have backs on them and so all the swings have backs on them and face away fom the fence. I have two feet of wood chips under my swings. I had a child fall off a swing once and never got hurt. I have a wooden border around the wood chips and I teach the kids that they can not step over that border without an adult's consent. They learn that they can run all over the playground, but when they get to the wooden border, they must stop. Really helps in preventing kids frim being hit by a swing. I have only had one swing injury in thirty some years and that was when a child jumped off a swing and ran right in front of the swing next to her. She had slight bump on her head, but nothing serious. I think your kids wil have lots of fun on the swings. Enjoy!

Heh it was only a daily occurrence here for awhile last summer when one dcg would consciously decide to walk in front of swings, then whether or not she got bumped, would fall to the ground and yell for the child on the swing to get into a time out.

                        Conniving little bugger, that one...

I have a swing set with 2 regular swings, a baby swing, and a 2 person sea saw swing. I have never had a daycare kid fall off of the swings, but dd has once or twice throughout the years. No big deal though. The biggest thing that you have to watch out for is having other kids just walk in front of them while someone else is swinging. I have never had any major injuries.

Well, my licensing rep was just here, so I asked about requirements. She said I had to have 6 feet of clearance (when the swing is fully extended both forward and backward) in front of and behind and on both sides. So I would need like a hundred square foot area. And eight inches of mulch in the entire 100 sq ft area. I would have to eliminate the picnic table and possibly even the play house to have enough space. She also said they are "injury factories" and basically strongly discouraged me. I am so BUMMED! I has just convinced myself (thanks to you all) that kids wouldn't get hurt a lot! The space requirement and massive mulch pile I would need pretty much killed out it for me. Ugh!

Injury factories? Really?? Oh for heaven's sake, !

As I said, I have had one serious injury in the 15 years that I have had a swing set; hardly an 'injury factory'. An occasional bump or bruise, but nothing major. I understand not wanting to go to the trouble to be compliant with licensing though. We don't have that kind of regulation here, thank goodness! I really don't know what I would do if we suddenly did have to revamp the whole deal.

Pretty soon kids aren't going to be able to go outside...they will have to be kept in climate controlled rooms with nothing to do, because everything will be 'dangerous'. *sigh* showing my age I guess
