I accepted an infant into my care after a long meeting with the family. They had said DCG would be here W-F 8 to 5:30 and that she had been in daycare since she was 6 weeks (now 6 1/2mos) so she is used to a home daycare setting. So she starts and nothing is as they said, which i generally expect a little of but for this family nothing is as they said!
Mom's schedule is always changing. They didn't say there would be any variations so I had no idea it would be this way. Some days she arrives at 8am and other days it 2pm, dad usually picks up around 5:30-5:45 though so I guess that's consistent. Some weeks DCG is here all week then the next could be the same or only one or two days (which may be split, like M/W). Today mom informs me this week (week 4 of care) is changing from m/t/w/th to just m/w and then next week she'll only be here Friday.
She has been in daycare before, but now i learn mom has been out of work the 3 months prior (not a job transfer like they had originally said) and so really she has only been in care a total of 6wks not since she was 6wks old.
All poor DCG does is cry, she wants to be held 24/7 or she screams. Mom says they have no schedule, she naps only if held and they don't put her down during the day. I feel terrible for her but I can't hold her all day long. Sometimes she'll be ok for 30 mins ONLY if i'm right by her. I'm getting exhausted, I have another infant (8 mos) and two 3yr olds (pt) that need attention too so generally this infant screams all day.
I keep telling myself to stick it out, not to give up but really its not getting any better. I've talked with mom repeatedly about it and she just says they are working on not holding her all day but "she's her baby and it's hard"
She's here so inconsistently, she never fully adjusts, and it's starting to affect the behavior of the other children. When would you throw in the towel? Or would you? Do you have any advice hoe to deal with DCG?
