Why do you charge so much?

I have my own answer for when parents ask me that. But I was wondering what other providers say if they are asked. I had a parent ask me today why the care is so expensive and I know that I charge high fees as compared to other in-home daycares but we also provide 24/7 care, very small ratios, video monitoring and I know just from the parents themselves that our site is not your typical run of the mill place.

But I was wondering what other providers say if they are asked.

The price I charge is the cost of me doing business. It covers my materials including crafts, food, furniture, bedding, cleansers, curriculum and outdoor equipment. It covers hidden costs such as wear on my home, accountant, and insurance. It covers my time so that I also make a profit, as is the goal of any business.

Ultimately though, the parents who don't see the merit in my program and who question where the money goes are not typically the kind I will sign on.

Yeah I avoid signing those parents. I only charge $20 a day for up to 11 hours so I'm not gonna hear a word about it!!

I must have charged too little because I can't remember anyone asking me that.

Public areas where the children are are video taped.

I just say "I absolutely agree....childcare is very expensive no matter what way you slice it. Its even more expensive if you decide to stay home with the kids yourself. You are welcome to check out as many daycares as you need to but I am positive you will find my rates very competitive for home daycares and way cheaper than any facility or nanny option. When you factor in quality and ratios, then you might find my daycare to be a much better deal. Feel free to take as much time as you need in the process but I do offer my openings on a first-come-first-serve basis."

I don't go into a huge explanation of what my charge covers, what my sacrifices are or anything like that. If they really feel that the price is not right, they can go find super super cheap childcare and all that goes with it....which is usually inexperienced providers, sloppy or even neglectful care, large ratios, poor diet and lots of tv time, etc.
