Our high school does not have bussing and we live pretty far from the school, so we had to figure out rides for our boys until they got their liscenses. When our oldest was a freshman, my husband drove him and his friend to school before he went to work and his friend's mom picked them up, so I didn't have to deal with transporting that year. happyface

Sophomore year, the friend's dad drove to school and I picked up. I timed nap to be over just before the high school pick up so I could do diaper changes and get in the van. The parents all knew that I had to pick up my son and 2 of the 3 families gave me a car seat to use; the other used my car seat. I thought it would be stressful, but it was not too bad...actually a little peaceful to have all the kids in the back of the car and me alone in the front....! But, I was still happy when he got his liscense that summer and was able to drive himself and his younger brother the following year.

I always had to make sure that I only had as many kids as I could fit safely in my van.

High school busses were cut years ago where I live due to budget issues and no levies being passed for years. I guess my sons could technically have walked to and from school but it is over 2 miles and down several main roads without sidewalks all the way. So I was not willing to have them walk. I am a worrier and that would have stressed me out.

I drive a mini van and I never took more than 4 kids at a time when my boys needed a ride from school for those couple years. My limit has always been only as many kids as will fit in my van in case one of my own kids needs to be picked up sick from school or if something else comes up.

Is there another parent at your child's school that could pick them up and deliver them? Someone that you trust?

Not to mention having all the littles, and what if one or some of the are sleeping? It gets really complicated.

Our state requires us to have a chauffer's license and carry commercial insurance coverage if we are routinely transporting children. I looked into it for a DCP that was wanting me to transport her child to preschool. The cost of the commercial insurance was going to cost me an additional $2000 per year. After I told her that she would be required to cover the cost associated with transporting, she didn't ask again.

I would consider asking around for carpoolers. What about family members that might be able to help out?

I wouldn't transport any child other than my own for any reason. The liability is just too great.

I used to have a dodge 12 passenger van. I LOVED it and didn't mind transporting as much then. For the last 3 years I've driven a Suburban (w/ the 3rd backseat). Not near as easy to get the kiddos in and out of.

I have a passenger van too, I LOVE IT. My kids love it too, so much easier to get in and out, we own a caravan too, now that is an awful vehicle.

I do transport dck to school because I provide before and after school program but I have a helper that stays home with the rest of the dks it's frustrating some times so I decided to only get 3 before and after school dcks for next school year and they must be with in the district limits so they are able to ride the bus to and from school.
