    Two Very Interesting News Articles!

First one-a little girl that is 3 was inducted into (Can't remember the name)but is an organization that recognizes geniuses. This little girl can tell you all about black holes, cell formations, metamorpheses, etc. She can read, count to 100, count by 2's, 5's, and is doing some form of math. I believe her IQ was 139 or higher.

Kicker to this story was this child was diagnosed with Autism as a baby. Dr.s did testing and such and concluded she was autistic! She seemed very delayed. The mother on a huntch though took her for an eye exam and all she needed was glasses. The poor little thing just couldn't see! I can't believe doctors thought she was autistic and never checked her eyes!

Second one-Dad smashes window of daycare center to get his daughter out. Dad went to pick childup and the center was closed!!!! He called his wife, she didn't have daughter and said she should still be ther. This was like at 5:00pm and they were always open. Wife called a teacher who came back and police. Teacher got there before police and they could here the little girl crying. Dad broke a window cralled in and found her.Police swept the center for other children but no one but little girl was there. Here's the twist-the little girl had been checked out according to the paper work she showed police and parents!!!!

The autism diagnosis story reminds me of a friends little boy. He's been diagnosed with minimal autistism (not severe, he speaks and communicates etc) but has learning disabilities and impulse control problens. Well we just noticed this but you can ask him what day of the week any day is or was and he can tell you within seconds. Example:
Me: What day does November 22, 2012 fall on?
    Him: Thursday
    Me: July 19, 1982
    Him: Monday
    Me: Next groundhog day
    Him: Saturday

It doesn't matter how far in the past or far in the future he can tell you what day of the week the date falls on. He even takes leap years and daylight savings into consideration but complains about how both drive him crazy. He's 7 years old btw.

His dad is beginning to think that his diagnosis is incorrect and we all just found out within the last couple of months or so about his gift. Makes you wonder about all of the kids that have been diagnosed with autism doesn't it?

As for the little girl that was left at the DC alone . Are you kidding me? And she was signed out?! I hope that she didn't go somewhere and hide or fall asleep and the staff thought that because they didn't see her that she had already been picked up so someone "signed her out" KWIM? Not intentionally but figured that maybe the parent forgot to sign her out so they did it so that their records would be complete KWIM? How scary for the little girl.

Thats why when I worked in a center, we wrote all the kids names down that were left and crossed off when we GREETED each parent! I would have gotten nervous and double checked because it seems like they would have gotten out early that day if it was only 5pm.

Sometimes, it takes a village. When I taught school, I had a 5th grade class made up of kids who weren't working to grade level. Some had been sick and missed a lot of school, some had a bad year for some reason, some had learning issues, mixed bag. One child just wasn't making it, even in our small, personalized situation. One day, I realized that he wasn't hearing properly, even though his hearing had been tested. They finally figured out that his corrected vision was ok, his hearing was ok, but there was something about the way those 2 senses worked together that wasn't working correctly. They started therapy, I started making adjustments, and by the end of the year, he was back to grade level.

It took all of us seeing little bits and pieces and reporting them to someone who knew how to put them together to figure out what this child needed. Good for the little girl's mom!

Actually, many of the famous inventers, scientists, writers, etc. have some form of learning disability or special needs. Some form of special needs makes a person focus on a certain concept. Therefore, the person can become highly intelligent in that concept or field.

I just took this next paragraph from this website http://www.bestyoucanbe.org/Special_...hildren_2.html

For example, Bill Gates was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome which caused him to become hyper focused on ideas, this level of attention lead him to revolutionize the computer industry. Albert Einstein’s extraordinary intelligence created enormous difficulty conforming to rules, staying focused and following directions. His thinking was so outside the box that he flunked math and science, reality was he was reinventing it. Cher, Jay Leno, and Whoppi Goldberg were all diagnosed with ADHD. Their enormous energy is what has catapulted them to be top performers in their industry.

So, yes, a person can be autistic AND have a high IQ AND be extremely intelligent and unbelievably good in a particular subject, field, or concept.

The kids mentioned may be highly intelligent and may have vision problems but that doesn't mean they aren't also diagnosed correctly with autism. Average to very high intelligence is one of the characteristics of Asperger's.

The kid who knew what days of the week each date fell on reminds me of my son when he was younger. We were sitting at the dinner table once when he was about 7 and I happened to mention that I thought we had an appointment to get our hair cut coming up soon. Pretty soon, the discussion turned to past appointments. He could tell us the date and time of each appointment we had had going back thru at least 2 years! (I keep calendars from the past 2 years so I was able to verify that he had the dates correct.)

Here is a really great website for people who work with or have gifted children. It also has a section on "twice exceptional": someone who is both gifted and has a disability.

I forgot to mention in my op that once the little girl received glasses all her "delays" vanished! She is showing no signs of anything anymore except her exception IQ-
