Toddler who pooped 6-8 x per day is not pooping!

I have a 20 month old dcb who since I have had him (8 months now) has pooped at least 6 times per day. It is such a difficult mess to clean and get it all off of him, quite loose, almost like sawdust and his bum was always raw and sore.

On Thursday of last week I had enough with changing his poopy bum every hour and having to fight with him to do so. He would arch his back, resist me, scream and cry every time, and him being a big boy it was really difficult on my back to even get him to the change area.

I would say to him "lets go change your bum" and he would start to cry right away and resist coming with me..

I mentioned to his mother on 2 different occasions that this is not normal and that I was wondering if he was lactose intolerant. She said "He was as a baby" Duh?????

If he was lactose intolerant as a baby wouldn't he still be so?

Last Thursday I stopped giving him milk. I have not given him milk since and he is either having one bm a day or not at all. I know he is pooping just not nearly as much. I know he goes first thing in the morning because there are often traces that he has gone when I change him in the morning. Parents do not clean him well down there. :-(

On Monday I am going to start giving him milk again for a week to see!

If he does start pooping a lot again it is obviously definitely the milk!

How should I approach telling the parents that I have tried not giving him milk for a week and it stopped until I started milk again?

This happened to a friend of mine. Maybe print out some information on the subject and give it to them. If they are not willing to make the change I would let them go. That's too much poo and not healthy for the child.

Insist that he see a doctor or he cant return. you really shouldnt be experimenting with his diet without parents knowledge.....I doubt that revelation will go over well with the parents.

I do agree with this. It's not your "right" to experiment with this child. There are times when I give my DCK's probiotics or flax seeds in their smoothies and things like that to help with digestion or if they've been on antibiotics to help their immune system but I don't withold milk just because I *think* they might be allergic. I take care of 2 girls and one of them is 100% allergic to dairy IMO. I've spoken to mom many times about it but she's not interested in hearing it or helping her child....just wants to complain about it. I limit the amount of dairy she gets (only because my own DD is allergic to dairy) but I don't cut it out.

I hate to say this but some parents #1 concern is THEMSELVES and what's convenient for them not what's in the best interest of the child. I am a good and loving provider but something is wrong when you care more about it than te parent kwim?

I agree. You should have discussed this with the parents BEFORE taking the milk away. You are probably on the right track with the milk and need to tell the parents.

Ugh sounds exactly like a DCB I have here, he always had rashes, several loose BM's and just a mess!! I insisted he was lactose or had a sensitivity and to have these many loose BM's is not right. The DCM was not interested at all until I insisted a doctor note or I would continue to send home for diarhhea.

So until that note came, I called for DCM to pick up DCB at least twice a week -- she went to the doctors pretty fast.

Does she have any other children? Maybe she just doesnt know that its not normal bowel function for a toddler?

Or she could have one of those obnoxious doctors that still believe in "toddler diarrhea"...
