Toys Banned. DCG Shows Up With Sunglasses???

I'm almost on the fence about this one. Would you consider sunglasses a toy?
Just last week I announced that I no longer allow toys from home... yesterday DCG shows up with sunglasses...? Maybe it would be ok if we were going to the beach? I'm not sure about this. They stayed in her cubby and went home at the end of the day.

I wouldn't consider them a toy but I would definitely put them up until we are going outside. It is actually a good idea for everyone, even a child to wear sunglasses outside to protect their eyes. If she will actually keep them on, I would treat them like her jacket or rain bootes...just for outside play.

I have a dcp that sends them in their child's bag, but we never bring them out because it becomes a fight over them, they don't leave them on and almost always almost get broken. Not worth it to me.

That is why I would only have a dck wear them if he/she would keep them on as an article of clothing. If he/she is going to take them off and play with them, they have become a toy and they'd go back in the bag or cubbie.

For outside only and that's ONLY if the child keeps it on her face.

My kids all bring and wear sun glasses but only if they follow the above rule.

I am VERY strict about toys from home (I have actually even kept a few toys that came in) but I don't consider sun glasses toys. They are just another piece of clothing, no different than a hat or mittens.

I think it depends on if she actually wears them or if she just wanted to hold them. I had a dcg who would come in with just the oddest stuff! It was completely random day to day. None of them were toys, she just wanted to bring stuff in with her! Her mom's id tag, a band-aid, etc. It was weird. When she started bringing in quarters that's when I put my foot down and immediately handed everything back to dcm. She was shocked the first couple of days, but after a week of dcg bringing in change I finally said (smiling) "don't want a dead baby". It stopped.

So long story short if dcg actually wants to WEAR the sunglasses, then I'd allow it. But if she's just trying to bring something just to bring something, then I'd turn it away at the door.

This would be how I would handle it, also.

I have actually requested for parents to bring sunglasses for their child to wear when we go outside. The child was complaining about their eyes hurting.

Same rule as above. I keep them until it's time to go outside and they must stay on your face. Any eye doctor will tell you that it is good for children and adults to protect their eyes from the sun.

mine kept bringing them in, even when we weren't going outside. He has quit bringing them for about 2-3 weeks now. I think it was just a phase he went thru

Off topic a little.....it its so sad that kids sunglasses are usually crap. Have you put them on? Cheap dark colored plastic. Its like the manufactures makes kids sunglasses out of the stuff that was rejected from adult glasses. Cloudy, no uva our uvb protection, just junk. Being in Florida, good sunglasses are important. I had to spend almost $40 on my sons sunglasses.

That's true, they really are "toys" unless you have good glasses. As long as she wears them outside and doesn't take them off, I will allow it.
I'm in New England. The sun in FL gives me a headache. I have to wear glasses and a hat when I visit.
