    Do You Exclude For....

    ....a horrible, wet, hacking cough?

She doesn't have any other symptoms beside being extremely congested, but the poor baby sounds like she's about to cough up a lung.

She's sleeping fitfully, and I know it's going to be pulling teeth trying to get some to be home so we can drop her off, let alone come get her...

If it is keeping her from participating, then I'd send her home. Or if she's coughing all over everyone. I had a dcg who had a nasty cough for two weeks, but she acted just fine otherwise and she was awesome at covering her mouth with her arm. So I just waited it out. No one else got the cough, she got better....I just think it's a case by case basis.

I would require a doctors note to confirm it is not croupe or pertussis.

I exclude for anything over a "slight cough". Slight coughing is fine but if the child is coughing constantly all day they are excluded until it passes.

I have it in my contract- coughing continuosly, will not be allowed, or parents will be called for pickup

I would suggest the parent takes her to a clinic to find out WHY she's coughing, but I wouldn't exclude her in the mean time.

My daughter has slight asthma and cold temperature and allergies are 2 of the biggest things that cause flare ups in her. These flare ups always result in a horrible cough that lasts for a week or more (though it's a deep dry cough with no congestion) We use her inhaler more regularly during these times and also allergy medication when it is that time of the year, but there is nothing else we can do for her (though I'm hoping since this has become a regular thing we may be able to start looking at other options to control her asthma). She otherwise has no other symptoms (maybe a clear runny nose if its the allergy season) and it doesn't slow her down at all. If our daycare excluded her for this everytime it came along we'd be out a good 3 months a year.

Her cough sounds different then what you're describing - I just wanted to bring this up because honestly if I hadn't experienced it first hand and a parent told me this I'd probably think they were full of it. But every single winter and every single allergy season her cough gets to the point where I say ok..thats enough..this sounds bad and I think there is something going on and every single time they listen to her, look her over and tell me its a typical asthma flare.

Yes I have a child in my care as well but it's been explained to me so I don't exclude her for that. It sounds terrible, poor girl, but I know it's not contagious.
