    Single Action Dead Bolts??? Licensing

So it looks like my daycare will be expanding this fall. I had a preinspection already done and was told that I need to have a single action dead bolt on my front door??????

I have been looking all over the net for this, but can't quite figure it out. anyone have any ideas on this? What is it that I need? and if you have one where did you buy it from?

I have never heard them called "single action dead bolts". What I was required to have was "single action lever locks". What it basically means is that you have to have a door handle/lock that can opened from the inside regardless of whether it is locked or not. Here is an example of one. http://www.sargentlock.com/products/...hp?item_id=136

So basically when you lock the door, it is locked for anyone trying to come in from the outside. But if the door is locked and there is an emergency, a child can open the door from the inside because just turning the handle will disengage the locks. It is a safety precaution.

I like the theory of it. It drives me crazy from a practical stand point because the kids can very easily open the doors when they are leaving. A few years back I had a very quiet 18 month old that managed to open the back door and get 2 steps out the door into our fenced in backyard before I realized where he was. So that night I went to Lowes and bought door chimes to put on my doors so that I can make sure I hear it if it opens. I velcro'd them on so that I can take them down when the kids are sleeping or when I a "off" of work.

I didn't buy that one because my building inspector wouldn't allow the deadbolts at all. I had to get one that didn't come with a deadbolt and had to remove my deadbolts It's been 3 1/2 years since I bought mine but I want to say they were like $40 for 2 of them so not too costly.

Several ways to go about this. The one snbauser pictured above comes in the more modern homes here in CA. There is a dead bolt at the top (outside key, inside latch). Then there is the standard lever handle below the dead bolt that also locks.

If you only have a door knob you may need to have the dead bolt installed which is going to cost you more then the $60 dead bolt. Maybe your husband can install it if he has the tools.

BTW, I thought this was a novel idea for fun.

Those chains on the maze lock look too long. I would just ask what lock exactly they mean because if you get the wrong one it's gotta go anyways. LOL

If you don't have a deadbolt, ask if they require one. If they don't, then you don't have the expense of having one installed.

Here is the site I bought mine from. I can't remember which one it was called but I do remember that I called them to confirm that it was what I needed and they were very helpful. The new handles fit perfectly when I took my old handles off.
