    Average tax prep charges

So the last few years I have paid around $500+ dollars to have my taxes done. I was wondering what the average is that everyone pays.

I wish I could do them on my own, but don't know how to yet.

I don't get any money back, so I always wait until the last minute.....

My cost is approximately $200-250 per year. Both my DH and I are self-employed so she does double duty on the forms.

We aren't given a family discount for it either as that is pretty standard in my area unless you go to H&R Block...for whatever reason they charge double that.

wow nice price...I guess it also has alot to do with the area we live in. I would never go to H&R Block. They don't know how to do DC taxes

I pay $300.00 and that is very painful for me... You are paying WAY too much in my opinion.

We keep good records and use H&R Block @ Home Premium software...and just do it ourselves. Never had a problem. You can even get live help with any problem or question you may have. The program cost us $69.99 this year (tax deductible!) That included a free federal e-file and then we paid an extra $19.99 to e-file the state return. So basically $90.

MY husband did ours this year. happyface happyface happyface happyface
We have a dcp that is an accountant and always offers to do them for free but I always feel funny about it. I would rather pay someone else. I don't want to take advantage of the DCP just like I don't want them to take advantage of me. I have found it is best not to mix business and personal.

$220 is what I paid last year. I just took my stuff to him last night, so I'll see what this year's total is. But it has been in the $200 neighborhood for the past few years.

              $500 is way too much.

I have called around to 5 different places that were recommend by people I know. All of them were around $500.00 with the lowest at $475.00.

I guess it must be my area that I live in......I guess I better learn how to do my own daycare taxes.....

I've used the same guy at H&R Block for the past 17 years. He puts in the numbers I give him for the daycare. I've never been audited when he's done our taxes, but was audited every time we used an accountant before.

This year I did go to an accountant because H&R Block just got too expensive..

last year I went and sat with an HR block consultant and they told me I was going to owe over $10,000.

I left, went to the same private firm I went to as the year before, paid about $525.00 and got back $13.00....

My dh and I are both self employed. Our accountant charges $450. We switched to her two years ago....she is THE accountant in our area for daycares...really knows her stuff and worth every penny to me.

OP--are you using a CPA?? Maybe that is why it costs so much more?? H&R block type places use tax-preparers not cpas. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's true.

We are in the military and they will prepare our taxes for free. However, I'm concerned that they don't really know the daycare tax laws. We might look for a cpa instead.
