Those tables that have the built in high chair seats. Discount School Supply used to sell them and now that i want to buy one I can't find them on their site :confused:

I think they have fallen out of favor. Childcare rating scales really frown on them, or anything you have to put a child "in".

Of course, the same scales would like all children to be allowed to sleep on mats on the floor when THEY are tired, and never put a child in a high chair (they are supposed to have their own little table and chairs, that they can get into themselves).

I often think that the folks that created the rating scales didn't actually have children.

I was just talking to a teacher in a center who said they were required to get rid of them. I'm not sure if it is because of state regs, or QRIS, but I'm sure its for the reasons bbo mentioned.

There was one for sale on my local CL recently, with six seats built in it. I had never seen one before and thought it was pretty cool, actually. But from the picture, I'm afraid the kids would be too close together and that would cause too much trouble at eating time. I like them to be far apart.

I had a ECE specialist come to my home once in 2008 in order to apply for the free 1500 STARS grant. You could have it ONE year if you weren't Childnet Certified but if you applied for it the second year you had to have the certification. So I applied for it and got 1500 to buy cabinets, table, and shelving.

When she was down in my playroom she made "suggestions" of how to set up the room which were pretty much exactly opposite of how I had the room set up. Her reasoning for the suggestion made it very clear to me that she hadn't done home child care. Her ideas just weren't safe.

So I asked her if she had ever cared for a child under a roof by herself. She told me no... that she had classroom experience as a student getting her Bachellors and that she had worked in a center part time while she was in school.

I was gobsmacked that someone would be hired specifically to work with home child care and had never been alone with "a" kid much less a group of multi-level aged group kids.

When I attend child care classes it's glaringly apparent when the instructor hasn't done home child care. I usually figure that out within the first five minutes.

I would bet more times then not the people in charge of liscensing haven't worked in a childcare setting or if they have its not in a home childcare setting.

I'm lucky in that respect! My licenser was FCC for many years, my food program person runs a preschool part time, and my Stars consultant was a teacher at a center! Imagine that! Still, center work is very different from multi-age in a home! I have a LOT more invested in my home that a center teacher would. Color on the walls? not such a big deal when you work there...

But if your job has to do with the minute to minute safety of a group of multi-aged children it would seem experience being the adult supervising them would be necessary.

I know licensing in my state doesn't have it but they are inspectors. They are charged with inspecting a home for minimum standards. Minimum standards can be evaluated by any parent... anybody off the streets... They are very simple and with some training anyone with a modicum of intelligence could inspect.

When you are doing ROOM set up... and you have babies with older kids... you need to GET safety.

I guess what I was thinking more along the lines of especially with inspectors is sometimes the ridiculous things of the rules and then them trying to explain them and possibly never having worked with children and living where you work.

Our area-nothing can be in your bathroom pretty much-shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, face wash, body wash, soap. That kind of stuff has to be locked up. MMMMMmmm I wonder if the parents lock it up at home also?

Same with diaper creams, sunscreen, things along that line-locked up and parent permission slip to use.

I think if the liscensors had to spend some actual time doing this themselves they would start seeing how riduculous it is and start lobbying for the providers.

Exactly, I wondered are parents cleaning out their own bathrooms at home too? Nope. I check my bathroom everyday to make sure my DH has not left anything behind. It is crazy.
