Lucky ol' me got notice in the mail on Saturday that I've been selected for jury duty! I requested a deferral but it specifically said that hardship referrals would not be approved. I specifically stated that I am a self employed in-home daycare provider. I care for up to 6 children and jury duty would not only cause a

I sent them a copy of my tax form showing that I am a sole proprietor of my business and that it would close my business if I had to go (I had all brand new families starting the week jury duty started so I said they would most likely find other care and leave me). They let me off but did reserve the right to call me at another time.

I dont know whats going on, but this was just talked about the other day and I got one now too!!!!! I have gotten out of it before. I just put that I care for 5 children and both my family and the five others will be affected. I only have one family right now and the mom said to let her know but I sincerely do not want to do it!

I think it all depends on where you are. I was selected for jury duty a month ago.

I returned the requested of paperwork along with a letter explaining that I own my own business, 6 families utilize my services, I am the sole bread winner for my family, I need to be here for my own children when they get home from school, etc.

Apparently it fell on deaf ears because my request to be excused was denied.

I appealed the decision and stated that it would be a severe and detramental financial hardship on my family, that I do not have any family in which I live to assist me, that according to the laws within childcare, I could not operate or get a substitute so I would lose a substancial amount of income. I then added for good measure that I believe in an eye for an eye and that in my eyes people are guilty and need to prove their innocence, not the other way around.

          Guess what...again, denied!

I called the county courthouse and basically asked what it would take to be excused. A doctors note.

My next step, I went to my chiropractor. I've been seeing him for years. I was in a horrible car accident 6 years ago and still have reoccuring pain because of it. He made me come in for a few exams, adjustments and xrays and basically wrote a letter stating that I have lower backpain that gives me the inability to sit or stand for long periods of time due to a car accident.

A week later, I was FINALLY excused!!!

We have other threads on this topic: https://www.daycare.com/forum/tags.php?tag=jury+duty

I actually missplaced a notice once and weeks later found it. I never heard anything back.

Mine came in my old married name! I haven't had that name for 4 years! Knowing now, I should have sent it "Return to Sender, Doesn't Live here!" ::::

The last two times that I got the letter, I just sent one back saying that I am a child care provider with my own children. I've never had to serve.

Normally if you have kids and are a SAHM they will excuse you because it would be impossible for you to find care for them. I got one about 4 years ago and just said that I was a SAHM with no family in the area and refused to pay for childcare in order to do Jury Duty. I got out of it.

I got a summons last week. I mailed it back today stating that I cared for an Autistic child who couldn't be left with anyone else. We'll see what they say.
