Of course its normal, It feels good to him, a normal part of life, self exploration, hes not doing it in a sexual way so to speak, to him it just feels good, like getting your back tickled.........You can do the jammie thing, but I find it very Wrong, to make them feel like they are doing something bad, because while it might annoy you, he is doing what is natural, and theres nothing wrong with that, I just have always said, Its okay to do that, but only at your house in your room.
It IS natural and I am all for doing whatever you want with your body at your own house but the child the OP is talking about is in a sense "in public" so she needs to teach him that he cannot do it at her house.
It is unsanitary because she has other children there, so in my opinion, using a mitted shirt or doing the PJ's backwards is not wrong, nor is it teaching the child to feel as though they are doing anything wrong. (which technically they are by doing it in public).- Flag

I agree with Black. I've never encountered this issue, but I like the idea of the backwards jammies. It doesn't harm the child in anyway, but lets them realize that there are certain places where they can't play with themselves, daycare being one of them.- Flag

I never got into whether it's ok this place and not ok this place. I just say " hands out" and have them go wash, but I have older kids. To me its on the same level as nose picking, hands in the mouth or potty talk - we don't do it here.- Flag

I don't find using techniques such as a mitted shirt or backwards footed jammies as wrong....they are teaching a child that he cannot continue the habit while in care.

What I said was, You can try the Footed pajamas (meaning I'd try that) But I think its wrong to make them feel like they are doing something wrong.....misunderstanding. I put my Commas in the wrong spot. I do not like it when kids are all over grabbing, and I've really only had one child that was not stop at this, and he still does it constantly through his clothes, never had the hands in the pants, but it ****s to have to watch them, Not a huge fan of the boys and their exploration, While like I said I will never make them feel wrong for it(and thats all I was trying to say, I have disliked posts I read her once where a Couple providers said they tell the kids thats naughty or wrong......I hate seeing it, my own son is a big humper, and he learned right away to go to your room, but he wasn't a constant hand grabber, thats a harder one to break, and a harder one to sit and watch, and the hands down the pants, that is disgusting........And so yes I would do footed pajamas.
silly commas
I do see what you what you mean about the difference between teaching them not to do it and teaching them to feel wrong or shameful about self-exploration.Completely agree, it is important to avoid that.
