Going to be Searching for Childcare for DS..

I was offered a PT job yesterday working 17 hours a week. It will be 3 hours (5-8pm) Monday-Friday and 10a-3p on Saturdays. I am very excited to have found something that will get me out of the house to be able to talk to adults and to be working in a small office setting!! happyface

My DH usually gets off between 3:30-4:00 and is home by 4:30. I would need to leave the house at 4:45ish. Being that he is military, his schedule can occasionally be unpredictable. For instance, if a tool is missing at clean up at the end of the day he would have to stay until it is found. This has happened a handful of times but has caused him to stay at work until 6 or even 7! So, it is only responsible that I find a backup/on call provider/babysitter in the event that this would happen. Also, there are times he works 12 hour shifts (6a-6p) and even times when he may have weekend duty.

I really need this opportunity to get out of the house and also to supplement our income a little bit but I am nervous about finding someone that could possibly fit the kind of situation we are in.

Any advice? I am going to put an ad on care.com and CL for our needs and see who contacts me. I would LOVE to find someone really close (like in my neighborhood) that could do this that I can TRUST but I don't know anyone..

Am I crazy for even doing this job if I don't know for a fact DH will be able to make it home every day?

So it sounds almost like a drop in care situation. When running your own childcare did you do drop in and did you like it.

Your son may have a hard time adjusting to a different schedule each week because he won't know what to expect. Also, that person would have to be on call and that might be very hard to find. I would have probably lined all that up before looking for the job.

Is there any other childcares on the base?

I do a lot of drop in care like that. Today I have two here that I used to care for but they wanted 12 hr days and I wasn't willing but they needed back up care today so I get to see them fun for me and the kids. Nice extra money to. I have several family's that I see every couple weeks to once a month. I don't always have the room but most of the time I can help out. The kids seem to not mind either they have some friends to play with then.

I don't live on base, so that would be wayyyy out of my way. I had planned on having it all lined up prior to finding a job but it all happened so fast. I e-mailed my resume, was called for an interview the next day and offered the job as soon as I came home from the interview!!

I kind of do drop-in for my PT DCG. She comes every week but on different days. I get the schedule in advance. I don't mind it but it is hard for an infant.

I would like to be able to keep him home in his own environment if possible and find a nice college student (we are really close to the UofA) to do it. It would only be 2 hours tops!

But, I may be able to have it regularly scheduled so my DH can go to the gym after work, that way it won't be scary for DS. Depends on what something like that would cost and if it would be worth it.

Do you think maybe you could hire an assitant that would be willing to come for about 2 hours a day when needed, this way someone will be there to watch your child should your husband get stuck at work?

I considered this as well and it is an option! The best option is probably a regularly scheduled someone to come 2 days per week for 2 hours and then as needed beyond that. And this would allow my DH to go to the gym those days after work!

There are a few in my neighborhood but I have never spoken to them or their parents. We are quite the homebodies. I don't know how I would go about bringing it up to them, though that would be perfect as they could walk over.

There is a girl 2 house down from me but I am not sure of her age. DH keeps asking me if I would consider her and I have met her parents a few times and talked to them.

I think that would be a really good idea....AS long as you are still able to make a profit. I thought about doing what you are doing awhile back, not for the money, but because I was desperate for adult communication.... Now I can't speak good English or Arabic and I talk like a 3 year old.... I feel useless.....
