    Dog Constantly Pooping In Basement

WHY does he continually do this and HOW do you stop it??? I try to make sure the gate is always latched so that he can't get down there, but from time to time it gets left open (kids) and if he can get down there, he poops. I have had it cleaned repeatedly, have sprayed enzymes, cannot keep him from doing this. What do I do???? Just short of giving him away, don't know what to do.

Treat him like a puppy again and keep track of when he goes in relation to eating times.

Once you know his schedule, take him out when it's time and tell him "go poop" (or whatever words you want to use) and when he does, fawn all over him just like you did when he was a pup.

Now here is the trick. He will get used to the command and then when the time works for YOU - get him out and tell him to go and he will.

Is he getting out during the day at all? If he is, make sure he is going before you let him back in the house.

Also, try white vinigar to clean up - smells horrible but once it's dry you don't smell it.

It's hard to pinpoint the problem when I can't see what his whole day is like.

I think kadiddle had some great suggestions. I would add that he probably is NOT getting out during the day for a long enough period of time.

I know I have one dog that will go right away and another that takes absolutely forever. She has to sniff and smell every single blade of grass within her reach and then circle around again! Very frustrating, but if you don't give them enough time, they'll come in and not have gone when they really did have to go.

He probably holds it until he can't any more and then heads for the basement, is my guess.

Do you have kids take him out? They often lack the patience to give the dog enough time. Perhaps a kennel you could turn him out in to "do his duty" would help, at least in the summer and non-rainy days.

        Hope this helps a little!

My beagle pees sometimes when he gets in the basement. I think it is because it used to be unfinished and he is not very bright so he would think it was outside concrete and pee or poop anytime he escaped and went down there. Since he is not very smart, he still will do that occassionaly if he gets down there even though it is now laminate and area rugs. In our case, I think it is that he is a beagle and cannot be taught (too much in-breeding)....! ::

It would be ok, my parents who are retired would take him. I just don't want to because my middle son LOVES him so much!

That is the weird thing! He can be left inside, upstairs all day long, and will NOT have an accident. The SECOND he can get downstairs, he poops. We have a HUGE backyard, and if it is nice, he is out there all day. It is JUST downstairs.

We have a fenced in yard. After he eats in the morning he goes out and unless it is cold, he is out all day long. Throughout the day he is played with by the kids off and on and then when my son gets home from school he always goes out and runs him. He can be out ALL DAY, and if that gate is open to the downstairs and we don't notice him go down there, he poops. He could have JUST come in.
