Update on Little Boy Waking Up And Crying At Naptime!

Once again thank you all for your help replying to my previous post.

Yesterday I posted on here asking for advice for one of my little dcbs who was not sleeping well at naptime. He would finally fall asleep after crying for quite some time and then wake again after only about 1/2 hour of napping.

I think I have figured out the reason for his constant crying/whining much of the morning and the reason for his not sleeping. I have discovered that it is probably because he was unable to because he was in pain.

Many times he would come here in the morning with his bum not cleaned well enough. He had obviously had a poop at some point before coming here and one of his parents changed his bum but did not completely clean him. When I did diaper changes I would always just wash him up and change his diaper.

This morning when he came in it was a little later than normal. He arrived at 8 instead of 6 as mom had an issue with her older daughter.

He seemed very tired so I gave him a nice little snack, turned him over kind of upside down like you do when you check to see if they are wet or if they pooped which he was not. He was dry and I saw no poop so I put him down for a nap at 8 30. He fussed and cried for about 45 minutes then got quiet and when I went to check he was sleeping.

He woke crying at 10 15. When I got him up I changed him and once again there was a fair amount of dried poop on his bum from before he got here. He obviously is not being cleaned properly at home after having a BM. Whenever I go to clean him it has always been a very difficult thing to do. Firstly he cried everytime he has to be changed. He really does not like it. Then he has his hands trying to pull mine away and he is screaming and squirming.

Today my dh was home so I asked him to help me by holding his hands and distracting him. I was really trying to do a real thorough job of cleaning him and I took a good look. He has an open sore on his penis but you can't really see it unless you really get in there and move the crease. He also had this white cheesy stuff under his penis when I lifted it up and when I tried to wash it off I noticed like a little break in the skin at the base of it. No wonder the poor little thing was so fussy. I think because he is not being cleaned properly he has a sore bum.

I gave him a bath and washed him really well down there and put a ton of diaper cream on him.

He played, had lunch was changed again and napped for over an hour and a half. He fell asleep right away as soon as I put him down which he never does. He also never goes more than 2 minutes without whining while he is playing. He is always making this annoying whine/cry sound when he plays, when he eats...........actually almost all of the time.

I thought it was just an annoying habit that he had but he has not done this at all since I cleaned him and plastered him with the cream.

I am thinking that he has been sore or itchy or something down there for a long time and I never noticed. I always do a thorough job of cleaning when he does have a BM but I have never checked it out before like I did today.

This little guy was probably having a tough time falling asleep because of the discomfort he was feeling and then when he finally did pass out he peed in his sleep after a while and it would probably hurt him because it burned and this would wake him up.

I feel so bad that I was getting frustrated with him. Now I am not sure if or what I should say, if anything to the dad when he picks up tonight or if I should be quiet and just make sure he is completely clean every morning when he comes in.

I have learned from doing daycare for so many years that sometimes it is best to just not say anything at all. He is here everyday so I can make sure he is clean.

Last night I mentioned to mom that he would just not sleep well here but apparently he sleeps super at home. He is in bed every night after his bath at 7 and sleeps right through the night. He never wakes during the night either according to her.

You should mention it just so it gives the parents the chance to properly care for the sore. Then the ball is then their court for taking care of their baby. Continue to properly clean him up when he's with you. That's all you can do. Good catch!
