    Unbelievable!!! GRRRRRR

My 6mo dcg has had low grade fevers, been extremely fussy, snotty and coughing. I called the parents Thursday to come get her because she was sick. The next day they decided to keep her home. Later that day they asked if they could bring her over so they could get some stuff done. I said no because she had a fever not even 24 hours before.

Monday she arrives in the same state. Fever, snot, fussy, and coughing. I call the parents again and have her picked up. Dcm finally decides that 4 days of symptoms deserves a doctors appointment so she makes the appointment for Tuesday (yesterday) but not until later morning.

She calls Tuesday morning and says dcg had a great night and awoke happy and much better. So she says she thinks she will cancel the appointment and bring her over. As soon as dcg arrives she is screaming with all the previously listed symptoms and I tell her I would keep the appointment. She says she will take her to the appointment but might have to bring her back afterwards so she can get some work done. I say ok, since you're going to the doctor just bring back a note from him stating what she has in writing and that she's not contagious. As it is we have all been exposed already so that's the only way she can come back!

After the appointment she calls and says that dcg has two ear infections and allergies. She asks if she can bring her back and I simply tell her yes, but if she is overly fussy I'll have to call you because caring for her in that state takes away from all the other kids and that's not fair.

She got to my house in tears saying that I upset her by saying that!! What was wrong with what I said?!?! She also informs me that she opted out of any antibiotics or pain meds for dcg because she feels they are "over prescribed". So dcg is still in pain and not feeling good.

There is a looooong story behind this woman and I have bent over backwards to accommodate the high maintenance needs of her and her family (my fault I know), is there anyone out there that would have done differently and either just watched the fussy sick baby, or told her to go home and take care of her sick baby.

Well, she's right about the stuff being over-prescribe for ear infections, but...BUT...AFAIK, by day 2 or 3 of fussing and pain, the current thinking is that it needs help to clear up.
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

Would mom go 4 days without motrin and claritin* (2 and up) if she had a double ear infection and seasonal allergies?

I'd call her out on that point.

(I currently have a raging ear infection that is making me a bit crazy.. feels like my whole jaw may explode.)

I agree doctors are quick to prescribe anything if you ask me. BUT I hate to see a baby in pain like this! I can only imagine what she must be going through! It was basically 6 days actually before they thought about taking her I try natural remedies for lots of stuff my kids come down with... I would NEVER let them suffer.

That is an excellent point! I should say that if it comes up again, which I'm sure it will.

If she does not want to give her anything systemic, she can at least get the otic pain relief drops from her ped.

They work great...a tad messy, though.

You can grab a couple little socks, fill them with uncooked rice, tie a knot, then microwave for 30-45 seconds. Test to make sure they are not too warm... then let her hold one over each ear (or you since she may not be able). She will think you are a rock star happyface

Just rewarm them every little bit... it only works while the warm steam is active. It is extra work, but she will giggle....

ITA Medications are being prescribed too much for simple things but 4 days of fever and an obvious double ear infection requires medical treatment in my opinion. That poor baby can't even communicate it's her responsibilty to help the child and ease the pain and symptoms. I bet she wouldn't go without pain pills!

I don't see anything wrong with what you said. I would have said the same. I do the same bend over backwards but we have to stand up sometimes.

I hope the child gets well soon and stays happy for you!

I think you should exclude this baby from care. Poor thing. The mom crying seems like dramatics to me, or maybe she is overly sensitive, or maybe the truth hurts. You were right to send baby home. Stick to your guns. Fever means no care, you did nothing wrong
Cat, I hope you are getting that ear treated. You don't want to be deaf like me.

Did the note from the doctor really state allergies?!

I don't think you said anything wrong at all. And I think it is awful that she will not give pain meds to a baby who is obviously suffering. I have had earaches that were not even an infection and it was not comfortable at all. I gave myself ibuprofen. I think this is a case where the child should at least have something to ease the pain. Yes, pain meds are overused for things like low grade fevers. But sometimes they are needed. Same with antibiotics. Yes, they are overused, but that does not mean they are *never* needed. If an infection is hanging on this long and the child is suffering so much, they may be needed for this ear infection. I know my doctor would prescribe in this case.

Yes, Ma'am... I already emailed my Doc and he called me in a Z-pak....

I was exposed to strep last week, so he said he is not taking any chances...:::: I am the worlds most non-compliant patient... Z-pak are crazy easy to remember to finish.

I take an antibiotic about once every 4-5 years.

I guess I am confused....why would you keep her when you know that she is sick? I wouldn't have offered to keep her "unless she gets fussy". No kid is going to be happy with double ear infections, allergies and no pain relief.

You did not say anything wrong.

Mom reacted that way B/C the doctor just gave her an earfull about how DCG needs the meds and is likely in pain ect. ect. ect.

The doctor has a resposibility to make sure the parent knows all the risk of not giving the child the meds.
