    Half Day Charge?

I have an afternoon appointment upcoming in a few weeks and was going to have my husband come as my sub. He just got notified he will be out of town for work so I do not have a sub for care. We have waited months for this appointment and can not change the date.

I was going to close an allow parents to use vacation time but don't want to lose that much money if I don't have to. We are not due for other appointments (dentist dr etc) so I can not make good use of the day otherwise.

I thought about offering half day care ending when my PM Kindy kids go to school at noon. The rest of the kids would have to be picked up at noon. Do I offer it and tell them if they don't want to attend half day they can find other care and the rate remains the same or do you think its best to charge less that day since I am only able to offer a half a day of care?

I would let all families know that you will be open until 12pm that day and the half day rate will be charged. If they choose not to bring their child at all they will still be charged the half day rate. Do you contract in for paid personal days for yourself in the event that something like this happens? If you don't it's nice to add it in and helps keep the income stable when unexpected events occur.

I would close for the whole day otherwise you may get stuck waiting for parents to show up and miss your appointment. If it is that important and cannot be reschedule, dont take a chance on parents showing up late or "forgetting".

I did think of that and am closing at noon and the appointment is at 3. Just in case. Do a lot of you have half day rates? I don't charge half days now for anyone so I am unsure about doing it for myself.

When I have situations like that I stay open until 1:30 and charge a regular rate. I use that day as one I count in my paid days off (I give myself 5 personal days per year but RARELY use them).

Once I serve lunch, the day is considered a whole day....just like our schools do when we have early release days. They wait until after lunch so they get the funding for the whole day.

I guess whether you choose to go that route or not depends on whether you think your parents would be late or not. If you have habitually late parents, I wouldn't want to risk it but if you have respectful parents that are on time, I wouldn't worry about it. I know mine have all been on time when I stress to them the importance of an early closing time.
