Daycare Family Just Told Me House Burnt Down!

I was suprised by my daycare mom coming and picking her son up a little early. But was more suprised when she told me that they had a house fire today. Half of there house is burnt down. I was like oh my word. I gave her clothes for her son (he is the same size as mine)& herself (not sure if mine will fit but anything is better than nothing)wishing I could give her stuff for her older son but I have nothing that size. I FEEL AWFUL! I dont know what to do. I feel like I should make them up a care package or something. I will feel awful for them to pay me on friday also. I just feel sooo bad what would you do? would you not have them pay? or feel they still should. I couldnt imagine what it would feel like to have this happen.

If you can afford not to have them pay, then it's a lovely gesture.

    Wow...

Where is WI are you? I am by New Lisbon....

Maybe you could send and email to the rest of your DCFs asking for donations and sizes.

The fire dept. will give them a list of resources and volunteer groups who are on standby to assist with this.

They have probably already been there by now.

Do what you can, but don't put yourself out too much financially.

This is ONE situation where there is usually a pretty good network for assistance.

The hard part comes later when all the immediate help slows to a stop and they have to pick the pieces up.
        - Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.

So sad! This is one of my biggest fears! I dont know what I would do, i am so sentimental that to lose anything in a fire would just be so tragic.

There is a website called carecalendar that helps organize people giving meals to a family in crisis. You could also contact the local school and church to help rally people. So sad!

There is another site, too that helps organize meals for families in need, too. I thinkg it is takeameal.com or something like that.

I would give her the week off of payment if there was any way possible that I could. That poor family is probably going to have some serious financial struggles, as well as emotional.

I would also make a few meals for them and collect a care package from neighbors, other parents, etc- anything that I could do. I would do that for anyone that I knew in that situation because I would want the same to be done for me. Imagine if you almost lost anything. So sad!

I absolutely agree about the ways to help. If I couldn't afford to not charge them for the week I would do something like allow them to make payments for a few months, or maybe offering free care during fire clean-up times, maybe even volunteering to help on the weekends once clean-up starts - it's usually at least a month and sometimes several months before clean up can actually commence due to the insurances.

I have had two friends who had major fires and had one myself, and I can tell you that what was appreciated the most (next to the donations), was the help with the clean-up! Mine was a total loss, so all I needed was a bulldozer, but it sounds like theirs will be a matter of sifting through everything and inventorying and cleaning and it is just plain AWFUL!!! Even if you can watch the kids for them it would mean a LOT!

                      THis!!!!!

There are very very many non profit organizations out there that will be able to help them. Do what you can, but don't put yourself out.

I do a LOT of volunteer work with the homeless. At least 2 times a month if not more. When I am there, they have to do a check in. ( I dont do check in, an actual employee does) The homeless people get A LOT.

You should see the list of places that they can go to and it's all free

                      Just to name a few:

There is a free coat program

Free health check ups, including free medical supplies and dental check ups, toiletry

Free food both cooked hot food as well as snack type food

Tons of free places to get clothing

I have even seen a vet. on the list that would give free check up and vaccinations to their pets.

                      Free places to sleep
                      Free shoes and socks

The list is really really long.
