    Sunscreen, Hot Weather, Outside Play

I have a policy for sunscreen and summer/ hot weather outside play.

Was wondering if anyone else has one that they would share with me...and others..

    Thanks

here is what I have....trying to bump this up too...Hoping for some input...

    Dear Parents,

With the hot weather approaching we all need to take extra precautions to protect our little ones from the heat and the extra activates that take place during the hot weather. Below are some rules that will apply Please be sure to read and understand these rules , as they are necessary for your child to remain safe during the summer time and while in my care.

    1. You will need to provide one bottle of sunscreen of your choice to be left at the daycare at all times. Your child will be the only one using this sunscreen and will not be allowed to share it with others. It is important to replace the sunscreen as soon as it runs out.

    2. Parents will need to apply first layer of sunscreen at home. More will be applied at daycare by me if needed. If you forgot to apply sunscreen to your child prior to drop off, let me know, however, don’t let non application at home become a habit.

    3. Your child must have a permission to administer sunscreen slip on file at the daycare.

    4. Your child must be dressed in appropriate clothing for outside play time. If the weather is extremely hot, I ask that you dress them in long sleeve t-shirts to avoid sunburn.

    5. All children must wear sunscreen if playing outside for any length of time. If the child refuses to allow sun protection to be applied they will have to stay inside. This is not a punishment, but to protect them from sunburn.

    6. Outside play time will not exceed more than 45 minutes at a time. 15 minute increments when hotter than 90 degrees outside.

    7. As the provider, it is my responsibility to make sure that they are given adequate amount of fluids throughout their day; however, I cannot force a child to drink. If at any time I feel that your child has not had sufficient amount of fluids, they will be kept inside from hot weather activities. Again this is not to punish your child, only to protect them. We don’t want anyone to become dehydrated at any time.

    8. As tempting and cute as they are, shoes such as flip flops or shoes with a complete open- toe, will not be permitted during daycare at any time. These shoes do not allow the child to play safely and go about their normal ways of playing outside. Crocs would be a good alternative to flip flops as they are secured to the feet.

    9. During the warm/hot weather we will be doing a lot of outside water play and learning. Water play can pose serious dangers to people of all ages especially children. The children will be supervised at all times when playing with water and will be asked to follow rules that will keep them safe. Such as no running, no pushing others into water and etc.

    10. Playground rules will be set to keep your child safe as well. Your child will be asked to use all playground equipment as they are intended to be used. Example, no walking up slides, jumping off swings, going down slides face first and etc. While this might sound rather harsh, it is simply being enforced to keep all of the children safe while in my care. Should your child refuse to follow these rules while at the park, they will be asked to sit the bench or sit in the wagon for a break.

These rules may seem harsh to some of you, but they have allowed the daycare to operate for the last 8 years without serious incident or accident. It is important that if you want your child to be exposed to free range play, that you take them to the park to experience this with you. As I always say children will always get hurt, I just hope that it’s never when they are with me. Let’s all play safe so we won’t be sorry later. Thank you for all of your support and understanding.

I have read, understand and agree to all above rules.

-We don't go out if it's over +30 degrees celcius
-They must apply sunscreen in the morning BEFORE their child comes to daycare this enables us to go outside early before it gets too hot. I apply a second time in the afternoon if we go out.
      -Sun hats are required.
-Rain boots and rain coats/splash pants are required

Thats it. Anything above and beyond this I discuss on an individual basis. My general contract states that clothes must be weather appropriate and appropriate for play.

I do the same thing as some of the others are saying.
I have them apply it in the am before arriving in daycare.

I make parents bring the spray on kind less work especially if you have a large group, can you imagine applying the lotion to 10 kids??

I used to apply it to 6 children, about 6 yrs. ago. That is when I went to having parent's apply it. Plus I had one Dad at that time, complain about a little redness on his daughter, that I couldn't even see the next day- from then on they had to apply their own

I don't have anything written down, but exercise common sense, since we have 100+ summers here.

SPF 15 only on children, higher can lead to chemical burns. Sunscreen reapplied every hour outside. (Spray is awesome when covering several children!) Not out on 90+ days between the hours of 10 and 2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. HM Juice popsicles are used in addition to water. Shade as often as possible.
