Question About 1 Year Old Nap

I only teach preschoolers, so I have no experience with the baby babies' naps. This weekend I babysat my friend's 1 year old. When she came to me shortly after 10am, her parents said she may start getting fussy soon. She 'may' take a morning and afternoon nap...but I'll be able to tell. Ok, whatever.

Well, she never got fussy, ate perfectly at noon, and then I could tell she was starting to get tired. (She'd be up since 730 and had a big day the day before..her bday party!). Anyway, I tried to put her in the pack and play but she whimpered (new surroundings in combination with everything else-the poor thing was probably confused). I picked her up to sing her a song, rocking back and forth. Within 5 minutes she fell asleep in my arms and I put her in the crib. She slept for about 2 hours.

Well, that nap was 12:30-2:30, so I figured she wouldn't be having an afternoon nap. That's the time my preschoolers usually nap but they don't need as much sleep? Around 5 she started getting fussy so I tried the nap...but that was NOT happening. I was kind of concerned it would effect bedtime, so I didn't push it. By 7:00 she was done for (8 is usually bed time...she passed out on the way home around then).

Any advice for the future? Did I handle this right? I know its all about consistency for a daycare or a regular situation, but what about these one time deals?

    Thanks.

At about a year, she'd probably like two naps. If she's up at 7:30, you could put her down around 10 for an hour, and then again in the afternoon at 2ish.

For daycare kids, if they are on two naps, I get them down at no later than 9, but don't let them sleep too long, just a little something to hold them over. That way, they can go down again at 12:30 or so when the big kids do.

I have all once-a-day nappers now, 12-3 or so, but my youngest are 18 months.

I do the same as BBO.

10 and 2 for twice a day. Under 12 months.

1 to 3 for once a day. Over 12 months.

There is a transition period, but it typically goes pretty smooth.

Oook so she probably could've been going down right around the time she arrived. Poor planning/info on my friends part Thanks!

A child 18 months or younger goes down for a morning nap right after breakfast...about 815am and I let them sleep for 45-60 min.

I then lay everyone down for the afternoon nap from 1230pm to 3pm.

            I do 830 to 10 and 12 to 230 for kids under 18 months.
