    Losing First Kids....Got Any Advice?

We have been open since June of 2011 and are losing our first kids since opening. They're 4yrs old and 6months old. We're not sure if we should tell them or not, and not sure if we should talk to the other kids about it while they're still here or wait until next week when they're gone. How do you handle this kind of situation? It's not a big deal for me, because they are my nephews. The 4yr old has been in 2 other daycares, so he might handle it okay, but since this is his Aunt Tina's daycare I dunno. Got any advice?

your post is a little confusing to read?

Are you asking if you should tell the kids or the parents?

When children leave, I don't really do too much. I don't say anything to the parents and will tell the kids when they ask.

I used to do all kinds off stuff, but then parents got to nosey and really it is not any of their business why a child is leaving.

I don't say much at all. If anyone asks, I will answer. I don't have a party, put up a banner, give them a gift, or anything like that. If the departing kids are old enough, they will tell the other kids, and then everyone knows. I'm not keeping a secret, it just isn't a big thing after almost 18 years. I can see where your first ones would be eventful, but you get used to them coming and going a lot over the years, and you just take it as it comes.

The older one has only been there nine months. The baby just a few months. I wouldn't say anything to the parents, children, or older child that is leaving. It's a very short amount of time so everyone should adjust quickly. It's a big deal to you because it's your first experience but honestly a couple of days after they leave you will have your mind on other things.

I don't say anything to the kids.... I do think the parents should tell the 4 year old - that is old enough to know what is going on and want to say goodbye to your friends. For the other kids in care, they adapt quickly, I will sometimes hear "where's joey?" for a few days but I just say he doesn't come here anymore and they quickly move on. Even my own kids really don't even remember kids that I felt they "grew up with" here in my daycare.
