    Should I be Concerned??

This weekend my family went to visit with some old friends. I wanted to see my freinds kids really bad, so I asked If they could cancel their Nanny so that I could pick them up and take them out for the day. They were both working on Friday.

Everything is going great and I decide that since its raining that I am going to take them to play at the Mc DOnalds indoor play slides. When we get inside I go to pick up my friends daughter and her face is covered in a rash. I look at her hands and it's also covered in a rash. It was not like that when we got to the house. I immediately call my best friend and tell her. She tells me Oh yeah, she has Scarlet Fever???> I almost drop the phone. WHAT? She told me she was just put on the antibiotics the day before, so not quite 24 hours yet. Ugh I was soo mad.

Her younger son who had not been diagnosed or treated looked like he was also not feeling well either..

My entire family was exposed to her. I currently have some major health issues with a weakened immune system. Should I be concerned that we are going to get it too??

Anyone have any experience with it? When do symptoms start? I am so worried that I will bring it back to the DCKs.......... I am not open today....

OMG I would have been so angry!!! This is different than one of your DCPs not telling you about a major illness; this is your friend! She should have told you that her daughter had just been diagnosed. Especially since she probably knows about your weakened immune system, right???

And the pp is right... scarlet fever is a complication from a strep infection. Strep is very contagious until 24 hours after the first antibiotic dose. And the boy was most likely in the beginning stages of it as well.

I really really hope you and your family don't come down with it. If you start having any symptoms at all; get yourself to the dr right away!!!

Yeah I was pretty upset. My best friend actually is the husband and it was the wife that I met up with in the morning. YOu know men always forget to tell you that stuff, but she should have told me when I was at the house picking them up.

I am going to go get checked out. I have major headache and chills today.....UGH, no fever yet though

I believe headache can be a sign of strep (my dd had a headache a few times when she had strep), along with a very sore throat and upset stomach (not necessarily vomitting). Along with fever, which could be why you have chills? Make sure you tell the doctor when you were exposed. Sometimes the tests are not as accurate earlier in the illness so the rapid strep test may come up negative when you do have strep. An ER doctor once told us that strep is so contagious that you can get it through the air across the room. Not sure if he was exagerating, but I would definitly stay alert for early signs and see the doctor if needed.

From a mom whose daughter has had strep EIGHT times... headache is always her first symptom for her.

If you have a weakened immune system; try calling in to speak with your Dr. He/she may not even need to see you or get a positive test without prescribing antibiotics for you. My father has a weakened immune system b/c he had a kidney transplant (I gave him one of my own kidneys!); and all he has to do is tell the dr. he was exposed to strep and he's not feeling well and the Dr will call in the antibiotics to the pharmacy. Don't wait until you get a fever to call... try to call now!

One of my kids had scarlet fever twice last year. No one else got it. Her first symptoms were swollen glands, headache and fever. She got a sore throat and rash later on.
