I Can't Believe This! What Would You Do?

Remember my post last week about schools scheduling so much during the day.

Well, I took this Friday afternoon off for my kid's music perfomance that was being held during the talent show. The music teacher was having the music class perfom during this.

My son comes home yesterday saying they aren't doing it that day now but on the 24th! You've got to be kidding me-there isn't even school on the 24th-

I send off an e-mail asking the music teacher what in the world is going on. Reply that there won't be enough time for them to play so they are going to TRY and do it at an assembly on Thurs. the 24th. I reply back the 24th isn't even on a Thursday and there is no school on the 24th.

I'm soooooo mad-. I planned for all of this two weeks ago and all my parents have taken the time off. Should I just tell them my appointment was changed (I had told them I just needed the afternoon off) and that I will be open but need this other day off? If I can even find out the correct day.

My little guy was so excited about doing this and begging me to come. So I took it off without him knowing about it to surprise him and now this. I just want to cry-

Were the parents actually taking time off work or did they plan for a backup? Maybe you could inform the parents of what happened see if they can still work around it. I'm sorry. I hate when we manage to work around things and someone still flips it on us.

That's awful. I don't that I would tell you what to do but if it were me I would obviously be PO'd . I'd let the teacher and possibly the principal know the trouble I had gone thorugh and the incovnenience that it was going to cause. I wouldn't take a 2nd day off, I just couldn't do that to my DC families. I would just tell the teacher that my child would not be able to participate in the concert and I would have my child have a special performance here at home in front of the DC kids. I would even ask fam and close friends to come. I know it ****s but I just wouldn't be able to bring myself to take a second day off. Is there any way that you can have that day be a field trip day and take the DC kids with you to the concert?

I would take them with me but he asked, pretty much begged for just me. They have had to come to every party, event, what ever during school time. He just wanted it to be me.

Yesterday, I took them to the valentine party and was spending so much time correcting them, taking them to the bathroom, telling them voices down, that I might as well have stayed home-

That ****s, I would definitely let that teacher know how much of an inconvience it is and how you will probably have to miss it now and if they want parents to actually come to things, they need to be consistent and not switch things around. I would also let the principal know what I thought about it as well...

I am sorry that happened I think I would work it out with the parents & see if things can be changed. I do daycare so I don't miss my own kiddos things.

This is very disrespectful on the schools part. Last year we had to add make up snow days to the end of our year. DS had his 5th grade graduation ceremony on the original last day of school. The school kept it on the original date because so many parents had already requested days off work etc. I was thankful, and a great deal of parents would have been POed if they changed it to coincide with the last day of school.

It sounds like he just wants mommy time. Can you talk to the teacher and go help in his clasroom that afternoon? Or maybe take him out of school early and get icecream or something.

just remember its not only you she inconvenieced its the other parents of the other children. Its happened here too, its not like I can drop everything and come and see, I need to make arrangements. I have a dcp who complains about this too, she works for the city and its hard for her to drop everything and go esp. when the teachers change things.

I would try to find out the other date and reschedule the time off. If not, is there someone who could cover the daycare for the time you would have to be gone? I have had my mom cover in a pinch, and I just let the parents know ahead of time. If they have an issue with it, they can choose to keep their child home during the time I am gone (while still paying for the day as I am still open). I have even had my husband cover. I remember when I was in stuff at school and my mom couldn't come - and it was really hard to deal with! I would also definitely complain to the school. It won't help this time, but it may keep it from happening in the future. Good Luck!
