I have a lady come Tuesday to help me devlope a food policy, this is what I have so far what does everyone think. It is realy hard to look at ait
objectively because I am here everyday and know how if works in reality and that is not the same as how it looks on paper.
Food: I provide breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack at no extra charge to you. I am on the 4c’s Child Care Food Program and they educate
me on the USDA guidelines for feeding children and they will come to my home unannounced about 3-4 times a year to insure the children are
receiving nutritious meals and snacks. The meal pattern that is followed for feeding children is posted near the front door. For a schedule of meals,
please see the monthly schedule/newsletter. Snack is usually a muffin (homemade with whole-wheat flour) and fresh fruit. The muffins flavor
offered each day in a given week is different. Fruit is fresh and seasonal, local and organic and therefore is not always something different each day of
the week. I get all the fruit served from a farm fresh to you box.
Extra snacks: The only time children will be offered food that is not part currently part of the food programs guidelines is on “Movie days” when
we have popcorn. This will only be offered after the health snack. This extra snack is not something that will always be offered on movies days it will
be at my discretion
Eating times: The food program also sets time limits as to when I can and cannot feed the children. Food is offered to your child but they are not
forced to eat it. Serving times are as follows: Breakfast until 8:45, (Children receiving a ride to school must arrive at my house by 7:20 in order to receive
breakfast), Lunch 12:00-12:30 and afternoon snack 3:20 - 3:35. If your child will not be here during those times, please be sure they have had their
meals. We eat as group. This means that everyone sits (even if they are not going to be eating) at the table during meal/snack times and no one gets
up until the snack/meal time is over.
Meal portion sizes: I offer food to children and they are not required to eat it. I follow the Meal pattern guild lines given to me from the food
program. I offer up first for everything to every child. Children are given as much or as little (including none if that is what they want) as they would like
up to one. serving size for their age. Seconds are served under the following guild lines. Children must eat what is already on their plate (remember they
choose how much and what was placed on their plate) before getting more food. Children will be given up to a full serving size for seconds, if the food is available.
Thirds will only be given after two full serving sizes of all food served for first are eaten by any given child and only if food is available.
Snack portion sizes: Snack is usually a muffin (homemade with whole-wheat flour) and fresh fruit. I offer children that day’s fruit and they have
input on how much or little (including none) I place on their plate, Then I offer the muffins for the day. Children are allowed up to one full serving size
for their age of muffins. For most children this is 4 min muffins. I do not put limits on how fruit the children eat. Children must eat the food already on
their plate before getting seconds (remember they choose how much and what was placed on their plate).
Food from home: Children may eat food brought form home under the following guidelines. Food will only be eaten when I am already offering a
meal or snack. Children will not be allowed to share food with other people, including but not limited to their siblings. Children will only be allowed to have
one serving of treat or junk food per day.
