So, I have been working on opening a home daycare with the goal of eventually owning a daycare in a separate building. I just found out tonight that a daycare that was located in an old school building (turned police station and senior center) closed a few months ago. I am going to call the borough office (also located in the building) to see if they have in fact closed and if the space is available to rent. Trying not to get excited, but am thinking this through in my head. My biggest fear is, what if I sign a lease and my daycare is a flop?! Is there a way to find out how many kids will be permitted there? Would the licensing people be able to tell me how many that space was licensed for? I don't need to know anything about the previous provider...just the space. I need to know how many kids are permitted to know my proposed income, to know if I should rent it if it's available. Keep your fingers crossed that it's available and that it will work out! happyface
Omg!

I kwym about being afraid of signing a lease, though. Dh and I were seriously considering opening a drop-in center here but after careful consideration we decided not to. Everyone wanted a three year lease signed and we just weren't comfortable doing that even though we are pretty sure our area could support a drop-in center. It is a HUGE commitment!
I would contact licensing and the city to see what info they have for you. Keeping my fingers crossed!!- Flag

Holy crap...3 years?!Seems like an awful long lease to me! I'm trying not to get excited, but trying my best to collect my thoughts and think of what info I need and who to call. Is it crazy to start a daycare when you have no clients lined up? The ones I have now are just as needed people, with the exception of one girl who comes every week, but she's only on Fridays. I haven't advertised for full time care yet though, so I'm not sure how it will work out. I'm so nervous!

Well, I called and the building's secretary does not believe that it is for rent. She said I could send a letter to council but she doesn't think they are renting it. Oh well. Just not meant to be! Wasn't the "perfect" spot anyway. I'm hoping this just means that there is something even better waiting for me.- Flag
