If You Were Going To Buy An Electronic Learning Toy...

    What would you buy?

I have one leapfrog toy, and they've actually liked it. It's just a tiny little letter writing one.

I kinda, sorta want something for the kid that needs to go be alone and play with a "one kid at a time" toy. But, I don't want to spend a lot, and I don't know what's good or worth while.

They actually want the electronic toy for some reason. I think it's just this particular group. They'd love a real computer, and I really, really should look into getting an old computer from someone. I don't want them to have internet.. but, I'd love for them to have access to a computer. But, I won't let them touch mine.

        One without batteries.

Really. I hate them. I have some here, but I wish I didn't.

I agree. I have none. We actually have a PC, that is dedicated to their use, but it's limited to eight minutes per kid per time we use it, which is about 3 times a week.

Fridge Phonics or Word Whammer. We don't use them on the fridge. I keep them in a bucket and the kids play with them at the table.

I still have the books and cartridges for this. I should ebay a new system since I have all the rest of it. They'd love that!

My youngest taught herself to read well with this when it first came out.

I had an older group last year, 2-5yr olds, and I found a used laptop at a local computer fix it shop for $50. I did hook it up to the internet but kept appropriate sites like pbs.org and treehouse.com in the favorites folder. The kids new to click on the star (there's a star on the fav. folder) to get to the sites they wanted. I also invested in a Webkinz Jr account for them and that was, by far, theirs and my favorite site. Lots of easy activities and all of them are educational. My 2yr olds up to my 5yr olds could play the games.

The fav electronic toys here are the Leap Pads and the Alphabet bus that can say the letter or make the sound when pushed. I don't know what it's called. The Leap pads I got in bulk years ago a set of 4 used on ebay with the books for $30 I think. The bus I got at Walmart also years ago but I think it was maybe $10.
