    Sick Kids

I'm sorry, I'm sure this has been discussed b4 but I'm so frustrated I just need to vent.

Tuesday morning I got a text that one of my dcg (18 months)would not be there because she is sick. That afternoon I got a call, she has strep throat. (Its been past around here the past 2 weeks). So they kept child home Wednesday and brought her back this morning.

Dad walks in & says she will need a morning nap today because she got up very early. Then tells me she is in her 2nd set of clothes because she has diarrhea and that its a side effect from her antibiotics. He told me she got it everywhere. I should have stopped him at the door and told her she couldnt come in. I should have I should have I should have! But I guess I felt bad and thought, well most of it should be out of her already. I guess I was thinking her normal runny stuff (she gets occasionally, still gross but not THAT bad). She was fine most of the day until an hour after lunch. I smell it. I look over and her diaper is orange. She has a dress on. I go to pick her up and its all over my floor. I look at my other dcg (10 months). Its on her legs

I seperated them, cleaned them both up and text the mom to come and get her kid. Her response "ill do what i can" In the mean time I brought out a play pen and put her daughter in it. Its nap time anyway. I get a text that she's on the way but I didnt respond cause I was cleaning and disinfecting my house and the toys the little girl had. She calls me. I said I'm sorry I couldnt respond but I'm scrubbing my floors now. She says "oh (long pause) she got it on your floor" and then I replied, "yes and the baby". I got a long pause again then another "oh, I'll be there in a min".

So she picked her up, I had the child ready and her bag together. I could tell she was annoyed. She actually had the nerve to say to me, "I didnt know she had diarrhea or I wouldnt have sent her." I'm in shock right now. I can't believe she would lie to me like that. I know the Dad must have told her that she did that this morning. I don't know a man in this world that would clean up diarrhea and not mention it to the mom.

Mostly I'm upset because I never have problems with this family. They pay on time. They are respectful of my home. The kids are easy to take care of (normally). They are not the type that I would normally become friends with but I do enjoy doing business with them. I have problem parents and they are not them. I just dont get why send your kid when you know she is sick and be around other children.

I should have turned him away...but what am I suppose to do in that situation. And now what am I suppose to tell the parents of the other baby that got pooped on?

first of all,.. take a moment, stick you head out the door and take a long deep breath. then exhale knowing that you are human, you are doing your best. You are having a crappy day. literally. Tell the babys mom that a child had an accident at the table and you cleaned the baby, and made sure she was clean. They dont need to know the details,... just that you handled it. remember the good things the parents have done and chalk it up to them having no sleep.

Sorry pigletsmommy. I hope that your day gets better.

Unfortunately, as long as she is on the antibiotics (usually 7-10 days) she will probably have the diarrhea. She should be eating a lot of yogurt to balance things out a bit.

Oh you poor dear!!! Deep breaths, it's ok .. Please mention to the parents that diarehia is not allowed inthe daycare, whether it due to illness or meds.. Also tell them to get some probotics to have the poor thing take.

It'll get better. I mean, it can't get much worse (knock on wood)

But this one line of your post makes it possible for me to go on with my day.
                So so true.

i can understand that being stressful for you, but i'm sure the parents didn't think it was a real problem that she had diarreah since it was due to meds. i know that is true because it's happened to my kids on antibiotics.

my son has to take miralax regularly and always has because he was just aaalways constipated. in fact, he got a hydrocele (fluid collection around the testicle) as a result of straining when he had bowel movements - and had to have surgery to fix it. one testicle was the size of a golf ball at 2 years old - when he got the surgery.

anyhow, the miralax he had to take, and still takes, make his bowel movements runny. they aren't so bad now that he's 4, but it was pretty much like having diarreah on a regular basis. had i not given him the miralax, he could've gotten a hernia from straining even after the hydrocele surgery. thank god his daycare provider was sympathetic (although his diarreah wasn't to the point that it was in the floor) because if she didn't allow him in daycare because of his BMs - i wouldn't have had a job since it's something that wasn't/isn't optional and was ongoing.

i guess the point is: sorry you had a stressful day! but i'm sure the parents did think the diarreah wasn't a reason to keep her out since she wasn't ill or contagious, but was a side effect. just think - it's OVER and tmw. is a new day!

it is frustrating and happens to us all at one time or another nice to have a place to come and vent to . I have had one this week who is sick I'm sure with an ear infection but they have yet to take her to the dr. I mentioned it twice now and so far they won't take her in so I guess this weekend when they have to deal with her being cranky all day they will.

Sorry bout your messy day, I have actually had to tell a dad to take dck home right after walking in the door and finding out that kid threw up right before getting here, as for the diarreah i have it in my policy that its not allowed for any reason! If the child is teething and has loose bm's ok but if its more than 4 in a day or not containable in a diaper they cant come, sorry if that seems harsh but i got tired of all the excuses and im tired of cleaning nasty stuff off of my cuch and furniture, i just told a dcm wed that her daughter had had diarreah all day earlier it was just mushy so i didnt call but b4 dcm picked up it was runny enough to leak through her diaper, i told her if she has it at home later she cant come thurs, dcm said its because she had a lot of fruit, i told her i dont care its not sanitary nor do i wanna deal with it..the dcg did come yesterday and was fine, although she is sick alot..anyway next time dont be afraid to tell dcp to take the kid back home with situations like that, oh and i also have it in my policy that kids cant return for at least 24 hours after their first dose of antibiotics..

Well I don't have a problem with diarreah or loose stools, as long as its from medication of course. This child has a history of loose stools during teething and diarreah when on antibiotics. I've only sent her home once before (she has been here almost a year) and that was because she was vomitting. But this wasn't basic diarreah. This was the worst of the worst. And she was in a dress with no diaper cover. I hate to be gross but my family calls it butt pee. Thats what it was.

Ugh I've had the same problem with a "diaper rash". I have told the parents this 2 yr old boy neeeds to have his bum looked at by a dr. Mom says its a heat rash. Its not...there is open sores. It looks like some type of bug bite to me. Like a bug got in his diaper and bit the poor thing all over. I just dont get it. I know its a pain & expensive to take a kid to the dr but it seems cruel to let them sit in pain.

Thats the problem I had. It was not containable in a diaper... In the past year I've been doing this I've sent this little girl home only once before and that was for vomiting. This child's stomach seems sensitive to medication or teething and I've never sent her home for that before. Mom was not happy. Oh well I guess I'd rather deal with an unhappy parent having to pick their child up early than have to tell another parent their baby got pooped on.
