    Lunchtime Issues

Lately i have had a daycare child making a big deal at lunch. He used to eat anything i would put in front of him, now all of a sudden he will say i dont like that. Even if he has never tried it, and it is starting to affect the way the other children are eating. The min he says he doesnt like something they all refuse to eat it. I asked him if he doesnt like something i serve for lunch to keep it to himself, but he cant do that either its getting so bad that none of the kids are eating certain foods. one of the days he said he didnt like chilli, well that was on a monday so i decided i would make it friday also, but get this on friday he had 2nds... Im confused and dont know how to get them to eat...?

You don't. You simply serve and that is it. The rest is up to the kids. However, I would absolutely NOT allow anyone to say they do not like something. If any of my dck's says that, they immediately leave the table.

If others want to copy, they learn real fast that they are asked to leave and miss out on lunch. After a bit of "no big deal" attitude on my part, enforcing the rule of leaving for the "I don't like..." comments and a few times where they experience an empty tummy, it will all fall into place.

During snack time however, the kids who didn't eat only get a crackers and milk....and NO SECONDS on snacks.

        I agree with blackcat.

I don't even do the two bite thing. It's just not a hill I want to climb. I put the food out, they choose whether or not to eat it.

But just like blackcat, they are NOT allowed to make rude comments.

I never fight or stress at lunch time.

If they say "I don't like it" it goes in the trash and they are excused from the table.

To a lot of kids it's just a control game. They want to see how many hoops you will jump through and maybe, just maybe you'll offer something they think is better. They also like it when the other kids copy them.

I don't play the game and after a few times...nor do they.
