If Parents Have The Stomach Flu?

If parents have the stomach flu don't you think they should be prepares to get their kid, as chances are pretty good they will get it too!

I have a mum who dropped off her child saying that she as in the Mum was up all night sick as a dog ( ugh so now you took the time to come to the door infect me, bring your child who I am sure will be puking any minute ... But really what can you do? Smack ppl upside the head with a shot of common sense?

She hasn't given one thought to you or the DC, I bet. She wants to go home and sleep. Then when you send DCK home sick in a day or two, or if you have to close due to your own illness, she'll be the one kicking up the most fuss about it. Anyone want to start a pool?

Sorry, I should stop posting today...I'm a weird mood!

        Just happened here

This just happened in my program!

I've often wondered whats the best way to handle this situation. Its the FLU & more than likely it will go thru the whole family! So lets bring the kids so we can expose everyone else!

To be fair, I haven't been sick (with the exception of a mild cold now and then) in amost two decades of doing daycare. My DH and my DD get the flu and/or strep throat yearly. My DS has never been sick either. He has NEVER had strep in his life.

Some people are more prone to illness and others are not. Despite exposure to germs and illnesses, each person reacts differently. Some people are carriers and others are less fortunate ones.

Not everyone gets the flu just because someone living in their house has it.

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago and no one else got it! There is hope!! The DCD let it slip that the DCM was up all night barfing but I felt that because it wasn't the DCK there was not much I could do, so I washed my toys and made sure this little girls had clean hands before entering the playroom. Thankfully it ended with the mom!!

Seems as though it has been country wide. Doesn't matter if it is a warm or cold climate, the snot, the puking, and the diarrhea seem to know no boundaries!

I think the best thing (and probably only hting) we can do as child care providers is be absolutely vigilant with our sick policies. I have already heard the "teething" excuse several times. I just keep repeating, "It doesn't matter what the cause is. NO puking, NO diarrhea and NO fevers allowed."

Oh, and the ever popular sanitize, sanitize, sanitize!!

                  Thanks girl

Lol hmm puking and teething in my expierience go hand in hand!

I know I have to be more adamant about putting my foot down with sick policies- wish I made it 48 hours instead of 24 hours as it seems like there is a lack of common sense.

I need to send out a letter again going over sick policies and also asking parents to be considerate of the group and my family - no more Mister nice 'gal'

I can't say this enough, but Catherder has an excellent policy for illness that I will swear by....

If the child has a fever (or whatever) and parent keeps them home, they can return 24 hrs after symptoms are gone but if I have to send them home from daycare, they need to stay out for a minimum of 48 hours.

Really... it works like a charm! I can honestly say that it has cut my rate of illness and repeated illness to virutally zero in the little bit of time I have been using the rule. It puts the responsibilty on the parents to make wise decisions and NOT to medicate and send anyways.

                    Seriously try it.

If the mom is that sick, she needs to sleep. She can't do that with a little one running around. That's why she's paying you.

Just because one person gets a stomach bug, doesn't mean anyone else will.

My sister was here over Christmas and came down with the flu - high fever, chills, vomiting, and diarhea. She planted herself in the middle of my familyroom, coughing all over the place. I knew it was going to go through the whole family, but no one else got it.

Both parents are actually home today as Dad is out of a job in the winter months!

I do see your point Sharlan, I guess in my point of view I would never risk it- passing it on to all these other little ones I wouldn't take the chance at all ecspecially if I had other care sources readily available just my own opinion that all others should follow ofcourse joking.

Anyway, I had to call home regarding DCG being sick - she came fell asleep at 9:30 (strange for her) slept thru lunch I called home saying she has been sleeping for the majority of the day and therefore can not partake in regular activities... DCM said it was due to gravol that she gave 'just in case'
                        Gee
